Feb. 6 (UPI) — The bishop of Padua, Italy, said a Catholic priest will likely be defrocked after accusations of organizing orgies on church property.
Police began an investigation of Father Andrea Contin, 48, after he was accused of having as many as 30 lovers, taking some of them to French nudist retreats and leading orgies at his small Padua church. A statement to police by one accuser said Contin “always carried a briefcase full of vibrators, sex toys, masks and bondage equipment,” beat her and encouraged her to have sex with a horse.
The investigation was opened in December. Contin at first denied charges by three women who said they were his lovers. The Italian newspaper Il Gazzettino reported he confessed to some of the charges after a search of his residence found video evidence of orgies, the news website The Local.it said.
The newspaper The Independent, citing the Times of London, said Contin is also accused of supplying some of his alleged lovers to men found on wife-swapping websites.
Another priest, identified as Father Cavazzana, admitted to involvement in the orgies, sometimes as cameraman. Like all Catholic priests, Contin and Cavazzana took vows of celibacy when they entered the priesthood.
Bishop Claudio Cipolla said Contin will be relieved of his priestly duties, regardless of the investigation’s outcome, describing Contin’s actions as “unacceptable for a priest, for a Christian and even for a man.”
“I am incredulous and pained by the accusations. Even if, at the end of this affair, there are no legal consequences, we have a duty by canon law to take disciplinary action,” Cipolla said last week. He added his decision was not based on the media furor over the allegations, but came after “direct investigation and verification that these events mean Don Contin is not fit to carry out his [priestly] mission.”
Cipolla said he consulted Pope Francis about the investigation, who told him to “be strong” in discipline.

A RANDY Italian priest faces the sack after being accused of staging S&M orgies in his rectory, pimping out some of his 30 lovers on wife swapping websites and concealing home-made sex tapes in covers bearing the names of popes.
Father Andrea Contin, 48, is said to have carried a briefcase “full of vibrators, sex toys, masks and bondage equipment” to visit widows and divorcees and holidayed at a naturist swingers’ resort with some of his “harem” of female friends.
Catholic priest Father Andrea Contin faces being defrocked as police probe bondage orgies allegedly filmed in his rectory
One woman accused the priest of encouraging her to have sex with a HORSE and beating her in the rectory on two occasions.
Police are investigating Fr Contin on suspicion of living off immoral earnings and psychological violence following complaints from three of his congregation.
Now Catholic church bosses say they have begun proceedings to have him defrocked and whatever the outcome of the criminal case he will lose his job as parish priest of San Lazzaro church in the northern city of Padua.
Claudio Cipolla, the Bishop of Padua, said Fr Contin’s alleged activities were “unacceptable for a priest, for a Christian and even for a man.”
Cops found a variety of sex toys in his house along with videos allegedly showing kinky orgies on church premises.
The clergyman is also said to have farmed out some of his lovers to male customers on wife swapping websites.
And he enjoyed lavish holidays with some of the women including one stay at a naturist village in the French town of Cap d’Agde.
One of the priest’s alleged lovers, a 49-year-old church volunteer, told how they had sex in his rectory.
“There were a lot of women hovering around him. I didn’t understand that at first, only later,” she told the newspaper Il Mattino di Padova.
Fr Contin is said to have carried a satchel full of sex toys and bondage gear on pastoral visits to widows and woman whose marriages had collapsed.
Instead of giving spiritual guidance, he allegedly seduced before pressuring them into participating in extreme sexual activities involving other men which he filmed.
One woman – said to have borne the churchman a child – told cops he “wanted sex night and day” and tried to force her to have sex with a horse.
She said in her police statement: “He always carried a briefcase full of vibrators, sex toys, masks and bondage equipment.”
More than 30 women have added their names to a complaint since the first three came forward to cops in December.
Pope Francis is said to have summoned Bishop Cipolla back from a church trip to South America to investigate the scandal surrounding Fr Contin, who fled on holiday to Croatia with his parents.
Complaints were reportedly first made to the local diocese last summer but church authorities failed to contact the police, saying they had not yet completed their own investigation.
Another priest, named as Father Roberto Cavazzana, is said to have admitted to taking part in and “occasionally” filming orgies.
Bishop Cipolla said Cavazzana’s case is “different” since “his involvement was only partial and occasional – though not acceptable for a priest” and he was probably keep his job.

Don Andrea Contin is accused of having 30 lovers and taking trips with them to a naturist swingers’ resort
An Italian priest faces defrocking after allegations were made that he organised orgies on church property.
Don Andrea Contin, a priest in Padua, Italy, was accused of always carrying a “briefcase full of vibrators, sex toys, masks and bondage equipment”.
He is also accused of having as many as 30 lovers and taking trips with them to a naturist swingers’ resort in France, despite taking a vow of celibacy.
The 48-year-old also allegedly concealed pornographic home videos in covers with the names of various popes.
He is accused of farming out some of his lovers to men on wife-swapping websites, according to The Times.
“He always carried a briefcase full of vibrators, sex toys, masks and bondage equipment,” one of his accusers said in her police statement, according to the Corriere del Veneto.
She also accused Mr Contin of encouraging her to have sexual relations with a horse and beat her in the rectory on two occasions.
Claudio Cipolla, Padua’s bishop, said Mr Contin would lose his role regardless of the outcome of the investigation.
“I am incredulous and pained by the accusations,” Mr Cipolla told a press conference, the Local reported.
“Even if, at the end of this affair, there are no legal consequences, we have a duty by canon law to take disciplinary action.”
The investigations into Mr Contin began in December after three women came forward making complaints.
The priest initially denied the claims before confessing after police searched his house and discovered video evidence.
Another priest, Don Cavazzana, admitted to taking part in the parties and occasionally filming the events but is unlikely to face suspension.
Bishop Cipolla said the church did not yet have “sufficient elements” to reach a decision on his future, but that it was “a different case” because Mr Cavazzana’s “involvement was only partial and occasional – though not acceptable for a priest”.
