The latest statistics indicate that one in five kids has suffered abuse,” he noted, while adding that the proportion of abuse by priests or religious members is “negligible”.

Former Vatican spokesman, Joaquin Navarro-Valls, believes that no institution has dealt with paedophilia “so seriously” as has the Church.
And so critical: “There is no mention of the paedophilia cases that happen in the family” and that countries are allowed to hold positions at United Nations that accepts in its legislation that a child can be taken as a wife at 7 or 8.
“I defy anyone to tell me the name of a single public institution – educational, military …– where the problem has been taken as seriously as the Church,” he said in an interview with Europa Press. In addition, he wished that the public does not fall “into hypocrisy in this case.”
“The problem of paedophilia is brutal, terrible. Yet there are countries in the world that, within its own regulations allows 7 or 8 year old girls to be taken as a wife. “This is simply paedophilia, and these countries hold positions in the UN and the international community respects them” he said.
On the case of the founder of the Legionaries of Christ, Marcial Maciel, Navarro said it was “regrettable and puzzling” and claimed that the procedure against the religious canon began with Juan Pablo II.
