CORNWALL – A police officer is facing demotion following a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday morning.
Det.-Const. Emma Wilson-King, 45, of the Cornwall Community Police Service, received a three-month demotion to 2nd Class Constable, effective June 1.
The joint submission by Staff Sgt. Garry Derochie, representing Chief Dan Parkinson, who ordered the hearing, and Det. Sgt. George Levere, representing Wilson-King, was accepted by hearings officer Insp. Daniel O’Reilly.
The hearing was held at the Cornwall Public Library.
Wilson-King was discovered at the wheel of a parked car on the shoulder of County Road 15 in Stormont County on Feb. 1 by an OPP officer responding to a call.
A man in the car flagged the officer down.
Wilson-King was earlier fined $1,000 when she pled guilty in April to impaired driving charges, and was also prohibited from driving for the next 12 months.
She will incur an additional $4,500 monetary loss due to the three-month demotion.
In accepting the joint submission, O’Reilly cited it was within “an appropriate range” due to Wilson-King’s “exemplary” 19-year career as a city police officer.

Isnt driving while intoxicated in the Criminal Code of Canada . I think Wilson-King should have been dismissed.

Drinking and driving is totally unacceptable in this day and age and I am very disappointed that anyone who is suppose to protect us would make this foolish decision. Fortunately, no one was injured but how much of a role model will she be when she goes into our schools and tells children about the dangers of drinking when she is quilty of doing just that? Another thing that hasn’t been mentioned is how can she complete her police duties for the next 12 months without a driver’s licence ?

WoW! I would be demoted right out the door. I would lose my job for having such a serious conviction. Two sytems of justice in this town

power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
people walking around with guns, thats power…allowed to drive like crazy, for whatever reason they seem to deem fit. Then what they do off the job, well, unless someone really screws up, you never know, they are just plain old criminals by night, cops by day…corrupt cops, from new york city to chicogo, and even cornwall, yes its true, power corrupts.

I spoke with the Corwall Police Commission chairperson last week and she agreed that a person with a criminal record cannot become a police officer and that a criminal record is grounds for an existing police officer to lose their job. During the discussion I mentioned that if this officer wasn’t dismissed then that opens the door for criminals to become police officers and she assured me that would not change the policy of hiring or employing criminals. The chairperson was uncomfortable when I mentioned that the public would not accept that this officer retain her job. What if a fireman or paramedic was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
As usual in Cornwall, bad police officers are protected and good ones like Dunlop are crucified.
