In the early 80s served in New Hampshire Monastery (Hundred Acre Monastery), a retreat house in the town of New Boston, NH – Wain was allegedly the #2 priest with a Trappist by name of Paul Fitzgerald as #1. Also at the monastery during Wain’s time there was a priest from Pittsburgh, PA by name of C. Richard Ginder. Ginder, a former columnist for Our Sunday Visitor and founder and editor of The Priest (a journal for Catholic clergy) and the Catholic Choirmaster, was a self-proclaimed homosexual: he was charged and convicted in 1969 for possession of photos of himself engaged in sex with adolescent boys. In short order he was out of jail and on 10 years probation. In 1976, after publication of Binding With Briars, he was stripped of his priestly faculties. In 1978 Ginder was charged and convicted for sodomizing two 16-year-old boys. Ginder’s criminal record was kept under wraps by the Pittsburgh Diocese until it was forced to open its files. He died in a car accident in 1984 at the age of 70.
Wain was at St. Paul’s University, Ottawa in the Fall of 1983. It seems that at that time he had connections to the Peterborough Diocese. The 1985-86 CCCD shows him as incardinated in the Peterborough Diocese, however in 1988 he is also listed in the American Official Catholic Directory as Chancellor of the Peterborough Diocese.
(When a search warrant was issued for Msgr. Wain’s arrest the word is that he had been hidden out by James Doyle, then Bishop of Peterborough.)
Wain had/has an apartment in Ottawa, Ontario. After Doyle’s retirement he moved in with Wain. (One day while Wain was out Doyle allegedly had a heart attack, fell into the whirlpool, and was later found by Wain, floating in the whirlpool, dead. )
Wain continued to function as a canon lawyer after his conviction.
Had and may still have a cottage in New Hampshire, possibly at Newfound Lake, Bristol, NH. Not listed in Canadian Catholic Church Directory in 2015 and 2016.

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – A Roman Catholic priest who led a young teenager to drugs and pornography was sentenced Monday to 18 months in prison for sexually assaulting the boy over a four-year period.
Rev. Martin Wain, 46, former pastor at St. Paul’s Church in nearby Lakefield, was also placed on probation for three years and ordered to get psychiatric counselling.
Wain, a former St. Peter’s high school chaplain, pleaded guilty last month to sexually assaulting the boy from March 1984, when he was 13, to May 1988.
The youth’s mother often wiped tears from her face during proceedings and at one point left the courtroom with her husband. “This incident has had a major effect on the victim and his family,” said provincial court Judge R.B. Batten.
Batten said the priest had breeched the trust of the boy, his parents and the Catholic community.
Court heard Wain provided the money and encouragement for the boy to become involved in drugs and pornographic films.
“The accused alienated the youth from his parents, introduced him to illegal substances and used the relationship to gratify his own sexual preferences,” said Crown attorney Harry Carleton.
Court heard the boy is undergoing expensive psychiatric treatement. The Peterborough Roman Catholic diocese and the victim’s family have reached a financial settlement, but details have not been released.
Defence lawyer Paul French said Wain admitted to having a sexual relationship with the boy, but said it didn’t involve violence or threats.
A psychiatrist’s report said Wain had a childlike way of describing conflicts between his personal life and the priesthood and his relationship with the victim was similar to one between two adolescents.
“The doctor believed Wain didn’t genuinely understand the effects of his behavior on the victim,” French said.
But the judge said he rejected the notion “that somehow the accused is a victim in this case.”
French said his client has not yet decided whether to appeal.

PETERBOROUGH – A Roman Catholic priest who “robbed a boy of his adolescence,” according to a crown attorney, was jailed for 18 months yesterday.
The sentence on Martin Wain, 45, a former monsignor, high school chaplain and parish priest, is to be followed by three years probation.
Wain had pleaded guilty in an earlier court appearance to sexually assaulting a teenage boy over a four-year period.
Wain’s lawyer referred to medical testimony that the priest had “child-like sexual attitudes,” and said the relationship was like one between two teenagers.
Major effect
But Provincial Court Judge R.B. Batten said in passing sentence, “This incident has had a major effect on the victim and his family.
“I reject the suggestion that the victim and his family have any guilt whatsoever in this matter, or that somehow the accused is a victim in this case.”
Court was told the youth, now 19, will have to undergo psychiatric treatment for several years.
As a condition of his probation, Wain must submit to treatment as recommended by the Clark Institute and must not be involved in any community or professional activity with children under the age of 16 unless accompanied by an adult over the age of 21.
The assaults, which began in 1984 when the youth was 13 years old, were carried out in a private apartment at the diocesan bishop’s home, in Wain’s Lakefield residence and at a cottage owned by Wain in New Hampshire.

The court had heard testimony that Wain gave the youth money for marijuana and liquor and that they watched pornographic movies and masturbated each other.
During the period of the assaults, the boy became alienated from his family and involved in drugs.
The boy finally reported the relationship to his parents and used a hidden tape recorder to record a conversation with Wain.
Wain was removed from his clerical duties when his superiors were informed and the victim and his family have received a financial settlement from the Peterborough diocese.
“The accused alienated the youth from his parents, introduced him to illegal substances and used the relationship to gratify his own sexual preferences,” said crown attorney Harry Carleton.
“His actions were a breach of trust in its most extreme form. The sentence must reflect society’s abhorrence of this kind of conduct.”
Carleton said he had no confidence that Wain would receive any treatment if sentenced to more than two years in a federal penitentiary.
“I am much more confident he will receive treatment, even while serving his sentence, in a provincial institution,” he said.

A Roman Catholic priest who pleaded guilty Monday to sexually assaulting a teenager over a four-year period kept the boy quiet by threatening to destroy his family.
Rev. Martin Wain, 45, a church monsignor and former pastor at St. Paul’s Church in nearby Lakefield, Ont., told the boy he was having an affair with the boy’s mother, provincial court court was told.
Crown attorney Harry Carleton said the boy was told by Wain that he and his mother wanted to get rid of his father so Wain could quit the priesthood and get married.
Wain also told the boy he had power to get his father fired from his job, and claimed the boy’s family owed $30,000 to the church.
The priest is to be sentenced Feb. 12.
The assaults began in March 1984 when the boy was 14 and occurred on a regular basis until May 1988.
Carleton said Wain befriended the victim’s family and took the boy on outings, taught him to waterski and to drive his jeep.
WENT ON TRIP
The first assault happened when the boy accompanied Wain to Ottawa where the priest was taking university classes. On the third night of the visit they watched a pornographic film the priest had rented and Wain put his hand down the boy’s pyjamas, said Carleton.
Other assaults took place at the Peterborough diocese bishop’s house, at Wain’s residence in Lakefield, on a fishing trip, at a Montreal motel and at a cottage Wain owns in New Hampshire.
Later in the relationship, Wain bought the boy numerous gifts and made a $500 deposit on a car for him, despite objections from the boy’s parents.
On weekends when Wain was in Peterborough, he gave the boy money to buy drugs and beer. They would get “stoned” while watching pornographic movies — usually at the Bishop’s house — and then fondle each other, Carleton told the court.
During the assaults, the boy became confused, abusive at home, his school grades dropped, he used drugs and he became alienated from his family, especially his mother.
Carleton said the mother confronted Wain with her suspicions, but he denied them and talked about the church’s position on homosexuality.
Prior to Monday’s conviction, the family received a financial settlement from the Peterborough diocese, but Bishop James Doyle wouldn’t reveal the amount.

Wain, 45, is travelling in the United States but is expected to return to Peterborough, Loyst said.
Wain, who was ordained in 1981, became pastor of St. Paul’s Church in nearby Lakefield in 1985, said Bishop James Doyle.

Wain, formerly the pastor of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in nearby Lakefield, now lives at the rectory of the Cathedral of St. Peter-in-Chains in Peterborough.
Peterborough Bishop James Doyle said in June that Wain studied at Ottawa’s St. Paul University from the fall of 1983 to the spring of 1984. But Wain did not work in any Ottawa area churches, he said.

The warrant was issued for Rev. Martin Wain, 45, on Thursday after police received a complaint from an 18-year-old Peterborough resident. The teenager said he was assaulted by a priest between March 1983 and May 1988, said Staff Insp. George Loyst.
Peterborough Bishop James Doyle said Friday that Wain studied at Ottawa’s St. Paul University, on Main Street, from the fall of 1983 until the following spring. He said Wain did not work at any Ottawa area churches.
Wain is now travelling in the United States but is expected to return to Peterborough, Loyst said.
