Charged 1989. Eventually faced 32-charges related to allegations of sex abuse of nine boys age 9 to 12 between the years 1958 and 1979 (one source says 15). GUILTY plea.
Sentenced to two years and six months. Lawsuits launched by three brothers alleging abuse by Sulllivan when he served as priest at Canadian Forces Base Falconbridge, Ontario. (Father Sullivan was NOT a military chaplain – he did serve as a diocesan priest at chapels on military bases)
Further criminal charge laid June 2012, and two more charges in Fall of 2012.

Three brothers suing a former Sudbury-area Roman Catholic priest for sexual abuse have outlined the nature of the abuse they allegedly suffered more than 30 years ago in statements of claim.
But the three men, now in their 50s, have never shared with each other details of the sexual acts they say they were forced to perform by Father John E. Sullivan in the late 1960s when he was priest at Canadian Forces Base Falconbridge.
The eldest of the brothers, now 57, lives in Nova Scotia. He said it wasn’t until last year that he and his brothers, known as BJJ and RJJ in their statements of claim, discussed launching civil lawsuits against Sullivan, now in his late 80s, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie.
PJJ said he and his brothers were “pure as white snow” when the priest began molesting them.
“I did not know at 14 about the birds and the bees, let alone the birds and the birds,” he said in a telephone interview from Halifax.
Sullivan, who lives in Montreal with a sister, was convicted in 1992 of several criminal charges of sexual assault against the brothers and other boys in four different locations in Ontario, said PJJ.
The allegations contained in the lawsuit have not been proven in court.
PJJ recalled Sullivan being sentenced to two years and six months after pleading guilty to 32 offences involving 13 altar boys, although he said he didn’t think Sullivan served federal time for the convictions.
The brothers are each suing the diocese and Sullivan for about $3 million, the maximum allowed under the law. There is no statute of limitations on sexual assault charges.
PJJ said he was together with his two brothers and their wives about a year ago when one of the women asked why they hadn’t filed civil lawsuits against the priest.
PJJ said he left the discussion, telling his family, “Because I don’t want to go through that (pain) ever again.”
After thinking about it for a couple of months, he began considering a lawsuit. He had read about lawyer Rob Talach, of Ledroit Beckett Litigation Lawyers of London, Ont., representing women in Yarmouth, N.S. in a sexual abuse suit there and contacted him.
Talach is representing at least a dozen clients in civil lawsuits against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie and priests who served in it in the last 40 years.
The three brothers allege they were repeatedly sexually abused by Sullivan at their home at CFB Falconbridge. At the time, they did not know that all three were victims of the same man, said PJJ.
In an interview last week, Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe said the Roman Catholic Diocese has offered some counselling to victims who have come forward over the years saying they were abused by priests.
But PJJ accused the diocese of being more interested in protecting its priests, and getting help for them, than helping victims.
PJJ said when he told his parish priest in NS two decades ago about the abuse he had suffered as a boy, he was bitterly disappointed in his priest’s response.
PJJ was then president of his church’s parish council and his wife suggested he speak with his pastor.
“I told him what happened,” said PJJ. “I was getting ready to pour my soul out to him. He just shook his head and said: ‘Why do people have to continually try to attack us?’ ”
PJJ said he left the Roman Catholic Church at that moment.
It has been a difficult year since the brothers decided to sue, said PJJ.
“I’m hoping this will really put an end to what’s going on. It’s affected my family, the way I raised my kids,” he said.
The lawsuits are not about money, he said. Most civil lawsuits are settled for pennies on the dollar of the damages being sought.
“We want an apology. We wanted support, it fell on deaf ears … and the only way we could figure out how to poke them in the eye to make them stand up and take notice is to start this lawsuit,” he said.
“And I’m hoping, with our lawsuit, other people will come out and say” they were also abused.

Priest to be tried on sex charges

A 65-year-old Roman Catholic priest was ordered to stand trial Thursday on 32 sex-related charges involving boys over a 21-year period.
Rev. John Edward Sullivan, waived his right to a preliminary hearing and elected to be tried by a judge in North Bay, Ont. District court Judge Jean-Gilles Lebel said a trial date would be set Sept. 26.
Lebel also granted a request by defence lawyer Paul Rivard to transfer charges to North Bay from other Ontario communities where Sullivan is charged.
Sullivan, who now lives at the Mary Lake Monastery near Toronto, was arrested by North Bay police last winter.
He was charged with nine counts of indecent assault and six counts of gross indecency.
The charges relate to incidents against nine males while Sullivan served as a priest at the Pro-Cathedral Assumption from 1958 to 1979.

Former priest faces 30 charges across Ontario

SUDBURY, Ont. (CP) _ A former Roman Catholic priest now faces a total of 30 sex-related charges involving incidents alleged to have occurred here over two decades ago.
Rev. John Sullivan, 64, of the Mary Lake Monastery in King City, Ont., appeared in provincial court in Sudbury Wednesday where preliminary hearing dates of Oct. 29 and 30 were set in the case.
In December, Sudbury Regional Police charged Sullivan with four counts of indecent assault on a male and four counts of gross indecency, but have since laid four additional charges of indecent assault.
The charges stem from incidents alleged to have occurred between 1966 and 1970 while Sullivan was serving at St. Anne’s Church in Sudbury.
Sullivan faces 18 other sex-related charges across the province including a total of seven in Midland, Wawa, and Sault Ste. Marie for alleged incidents dating back to 1958.
The remaining charges are are for incidents alleged to have occurred in North Bay between 1966 and 1979, while Sullivan served intermittently as priest at the Pro-Cathedral of the Assumption.

He probably won’t be there Mike, but I just don’t know. And, yes, the public can attend these hearings. These are the ones which are usually over, as I say, ‘in the twinkle of an eye.’ If you’re not up front in the courtroom and listening closely it’s easy to miss what happened, or sometimes even if it’s his name which was called!
Why all the “to be spoken to” delays? It’s criminal how defense lawyers can manipulate the court system. Probably counting on the collar’s demise to stop the proceedings…don’t we have any judges with balls enough to stop the foolishness? I feel bad for the plaintiff!
It’s ridiculous, isn’t it? This can go an and on and on for a year or more. When the accused is out and about and foot-loose-and-fancy-free it serves him well. It is extremely hard on the complainants and their families.

Perhaps at the end of the day there is actually something positive going on here – that’s a lot of court dates in close succession. Something must surely be in the wind? Hopefully??!! For the sake of the complainant, I hope that’s the case.
How do I go about laying charges against Father sullivan??.In the Early 80’s he was sent up to Midland Ontario,And worked at St,Margrets Church On Hugel St. Many of my class mates were abused as well as My Best friend. He has called a lawyer And I gues while is is incarcerated for another 8 months they will be doing what they can .Is there anymore advice or help you can provide me with??
I am always sad to know that another child was molested by a priest, but also happy that another victim has found the courage to come forward. I commend you Leslie!
What do you do to lay charges? Contact your local police force Leslie. Tell them you want to report childhood sex abuse by a priest in Midland, Ontario. Wherever you live your local police (or RCMP) should get you in touch with the police service which should handle the investigation. If they don’t offer to do that for you, you ask them to please direct you.
Before you make the call be ready to make a statement which as far as possible covers everything you can remember, including, as difficult as it is, all details you can recall of every incident of the abuse itself.
To my knowledge Father Sullivan is not in jail. The last we knew of him he was in hospital in Montreal and unable to show up in North Bay to face new charges. Tat was some time ago.
My thoughts and prayers are with you as you proceed. Please take comfort in the knowledge that there are many people out here who are supporting you, and praying for you.

It is never too late and although it hurts me deeply to find out there were more like myself and my brothers who suffered at the hands of this pervert collar. Father Sullivan was in Wawa in the fifties. I know this because I married a man who was abused by him. He stated it only happened once and he put it behind him. However, once after a few beers, he commented that he should have done more to prevent him from touching other boys . He said, “We would warn the new boys not to be caught alone with him.”

attended court today. Of course poor old Mr Sullivan did not have be troubled to attend. January 27 is next date to plead. I was informed today that he has been placed in a nursing home. ( SHOULD BE A ANIMAL SHELTER). Was also informed today by someone very important that he will never be imprisoned, but not in those words. For 40 some years this has tormented me and to hear that he will just walk the walk is just very hard to accept, but something I guess I will have to. I should have come forward sooner, but I was never able too until I was in the right place in my life. Father Sullivan has had long now to decide if he did or not commit the crime? Over a year?! And he’s still thinking it through?!!! That always speaks volumes to me. Lawyers et al say that that’s the right of the accused, but, I will say without hesitation that I believe to the depth of my being that if a priest committed the crime he should fess up and not put his victims through this agony, and if he did not then he should enter the ‘not guilty’ plea. If he did it and his lawyer advises silence he (Father Sullivan) should check with God and follow His advice.

LMFC (and PJ) – I can’t begin to imagine the depth of your frustration given the depth of mine simply reading through this blog. It appears that all the “to be spoken to(s)” between August 14, 2012 and September 17, 2013 would either be because all of the disclosure had not been provided by the crown or Sullivan/lawyer had not been able to review it all before each appearance listed then adjourned to another date. The “17 September 2013: 09:30 am, courtroom #101, “to set a date,” would have been to set a date for “for trial” IF he had been there then or today, there would have been a plea of ‘not guilty’ and a trial date set. Unfortunately that’s now dragged out to January to JUST set a DATE for trial! *arghhhh*

I lay awake most nights thinking of the abuse that not only you and myself recived at the hands of this PREADATOR .. but of all the childern that he has abusted . No one that has not been abused can realy understand the Pain and Guilt that is felt . This has gone on for far to long .. It has affected my entire life (for almost 46 years ) I try to forget the shame and guilt but it keeps me up .. there is not a single day that i dont think about the abuse.. Now to here that Sullivan wont due time because of his age.. What about the age of us when the abuse started . Sullivans life is almost over but we have a lot of life to live and his abuse will be with us for a lot longer . Everyone who finds themselves in this situation thinks they have nothing left to live for or to hope for.
All do have hope for healing! It is a process, and it begins by taking the first step. That is done by seeking help, either Professional help, or through Group therapy. I know about that kind of hopelessness. I was there, and without even the hope of having hope again.
That was 31 years ago, and once I got on the road of healing, gradually the crap started falling away. Not every day has been a good day, but every day has been a BETTER day than the ones I went through carrying that bag of s**t around.
There are many people who have become or will become aware of your situation, and some will offer to help if they know you, The rest of us will Pray for you, and ask God to restore HOPE to you, and courage, and, eventually, Peace. It will come, one day at a time, I promise you. All you need to do is be willing, and to reach out for the help. You have already started reaching out by posting here.. No! Joe is just a good catholic! In church every Sunday, probably in the same seat, same Parish where he was born. He is in charge of the “collection” basket and he sees all the money ,all the efforts to try and maintain the past…the roof needs fixing and the furnace is still siphoning more than its fill of expensive oil. I don’t believe so. I could give you a list of names in my area, in a number of conversations I have had, who simply can’t really accept that this abuse occurred. He probably only remembers the large amounts of some settlements such as the St-Croix in Montreal…and now the Redemptorists in Quebec who are in the headlines. Everyone is talking “millions” and he is comparing himself to those victims he can only call “individuals”… The church and the abusers are still finding some excuse in the same line, “it is all about the money”. It has filtered down and is sticking to those who only give it a passing thought once in a while. They don’t see the big picture, don’t really want to see it . A matter of psychological “survival”….

Can a couple of you posters here maybe inform everyone of what it takes and how long a civil suit takes. I don’t think that once he’s found guilty that a cheque is handed out the next day. Can someone take us through the process. It might help others understand that it’s not a walk in the park. Can a few of you give us some first hand in site to this process.
DC III: The pervert collar that abused about 11 of us (the collar is the one found in this thread) pleaded guilty in all 4 of the jurisdictions in 1990 for his crimes dating between the 60s and 70s. About 32 charges in all but he strung us all along in these cases until the week before trial dates and then pleaded guilty. It took a couple of years for the process to complete and he was sentenced to 2 years and another 6 months however I doubt he did the full sentence. It wasn’t until about 2010 that I felt I was strong enough to pursue litigation. It is a brutal process and is still ongoing. I am pissed off at that church, the pervert collar, and the other collars and lawyers that are dragging this process out but in reality, it’s costing them much more than what a simple acknowledgement and settlement would have been had they done the right thing. So although they drag their heels, postpone, delay, deny, their legal fees are likely huge and the longer they want to go, the better I feel because I will win in the end. The whole process is truly agonizing and for those that think it’s an easy ticket to money you are only fooling yourself. So why am I going through this?? Because the more of us that gather the courage and resolve to confront that church in a public manner, the more that others who were also abused will find the courage to step forward. My first step back in 1989 began while watching the Mount Cashel inquiry. The courage of those men coming forward and exposing their hearts and souls in public inspired me to promise to do the same if I knew my abuser was still alive. 3 weeks later, I read a tiny article about a collar being charged in North Bay and it was him…the rest is history. And I’m not done with that pervert collar either….

Usually in Ontario sex abuse lawsuits are filed individually Chloe. I believe there have been several lawsuits suits filed regarding Father John E. Sullivan but I have no idea how many.
As for sending the info to the Vatican, I will have to think about that. Pope Francis set up that commission which meets twice a year – that seems to be his response to the sexual abuse scandal within the Church.
