Brothers never shared abuse details

The Sudbury Star

May (?) 2011

By CAROL MULLIGAN, THE SUDBURY STAR

Three brothers suing a former Sudbury-area Roman Catholic priest for sexual abuse have outlined the nature of the abuse they allegedly suffered more than 30 years ago in statements of claim.

But the three men, now in their 50s, have never shared with each other details of the sexual acts they say they were forced to perform by Father John E. Sullivan in the late 1960s when he was priest at Canadian Forces Base Falconbridge.

The eldest of the brothers, now 57, lives in Nova Scotia. He said it wasn’t until last year that he and his brothers, known as BJJ and RJJ in their statements of claim, discussed launching civil lawsuits against Sullivan, now in his late 80s, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie.

PJJ said he and his brothers were “pure as white snow” when the priest began molesting them.

“I did not know at 14 about the birds and the bees, let alone the birds and the birds,” he said in a telephone interview from Halifax.

Sullivan, who lives in Montreal with a sister, was convicted in 1992 of several criminal charges of sexual assault against the brothers and other boys in four different locations in Ontario, said PJJ.

The allegations contained in the lawsuit have not been proven in court.

PJJ recalled Sullivan being sentenced to two years and six months after pleading guilty to 32 offences involving 13 altar boys, although he said he didn’t think Sullivan served federal time for the convictions.

The brothers are each suing the diocese and Sullivan for about $3 million, the maximum allowed under the law. There is no statute of limitations on sexual assault charges.

PJJ said he was together with his two brothers and their wives about a year ago when one of the women asked why they hadn’t filed civil lawsuits against the priest.

PJJ said he left the discussion, telling his family, “Because I don’t want to go through that (pain) ever again.”

After thinking about it for a couple of months, he began considering a lawsuit. He had read about lawyer Rob Talach, of Ledroit Beckett Litigation Lawyers of London, Ont., representing women in Yarmouth, N.S. in a sexual abuse suit there and contacted him.

Talach is representing at least a dozen clients in civil lawsuits against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie and priests who served in it in the last 40 years.

The three brothers allege they were repeatedly sexually abused by Sullivan at their home at CFB Falconbridge. At the time, they did not know that all three were victims of the same man, said PJJ.

In an interview last week, Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe said the Roman Catholic Diocese has offered some counselling to victims who have come forward over the years saying they were abused by priests.

But PJJ accused the diocese of being more interested in protecting its priests, and getting help for them, than helping victims.

PJJ said when he told his parish priest in NS two decades ago about the abuse he had suffered as a boy, he was bitterly disappointed in his priest’s response.

PJJ was then president of his church’s parish council and his wife suggested he speak with his pastor.

“I told him what happened,” said PJJ. “I was getting ready to pour my soul out to him. He just shook his head and said: ‘Why do people have to continually try to attack us?’ ”

PJJ said he left the Roman Catholic Church at that moment.

It has been a difficult year since the brothers decided to sue, said PJJ.

“I’m hoping this will really put an end to what’s going on. It’s affected my family, the way I raised my kids,” he said.

The lawsuits are not about money, he said. Most civil lawsuits are settled for pennies on the dollar of the damages being sought.

“We want an apology. We wanted support, it fell on deaf ears … and the only way we could figure out how to poke them in the eye to make them stand up and take notice is to start this lawsuit,” he said.

“And I’m hoping, with our lawsuit, other people will come out and say” they were also abused.

Priest to be tried on sex charges

17  August 1990

Edmonton Journal.

A 65-year-old Roman Catholic priest was ordered to stand trial Thursday on 32 sex-related charges involving boys over a 21-year period.

Rev. John Edward Sullivan, waived his right to a preliminary hearing and elected to be tried by a judge in North Bay, Ont. District court Judge Jean-Gilles Lebel said a trial date would be set Sept. 26.

Lebel also granted a request by defence lawyer Paul Rivard to transfer charges to North Bay from other Ontario communities where Sullivan is charged.

Sullivan, who now lives at the Mary Lake Monastery near Toronto, was arrested by North Bay police last winter.

He was charged with nine counts of indecent assault and six counts of gross indecency.

The charges relate to incidents against nine males while Sullivan served as a priest at the Pro-Cathedral Assumption from 1958 to 1979.

119 Responses to Sullivan: MR. John E. Sullivan

  1. Mike Fitzgerald says:

    PJ;
A lot of us will take some skeletons to the grave with us. I know what you mean – As my mother has always said, “it’ll all come out in the wash” Mike.

  2. Mike Fitzgerald says:

I have just read about saint john-paul ll, and am quite confused. I say this in the context of the conversation regarding this “priest” Sullivan.
Apparently, our saintly former pope, who spirited his good friend Bernard Prince away to hide out in the Vatican in the hopes that the criminal warrants for his arrest would blow away in the wind, had a married girlfriend.
This quote from one of the pope’s letters to his “friend” goes like this – “God gave you to me, and YOU are my vocation”.
Is it any small wonder that Sullivan is still a priest? Mike.

  3. Mike Fitzgerald says:

Sorry, here I go again! The picture of the pope coming out of a tent in the morning, with a married woman is a bit over the top.
What is her husband thinking? Why keep this a deep, dark secret all these years, if it is just “platonic”
I don’t get it, and probably never will. Mike.

  4. Lina says:

Pope Francis admitted that he knew of the “close friendship” between St. John Paul II and a female philosopher named Anna Teresa Tymieniecka, saying that there was nothing wrong with this since even popes need “healthy, holy friendships” with women.

    http://www.christiantoday.com/article/nothing.wrong.with.saint.john.paul.iis.healthy.holy.female.friendship.says.pope.francis/80307.htm

As for me I didn’t have an “healthy, holy friendship” with my former parish priest. Let’s just say it was the best of times and the worst of times and the worst of times was my exercise of examination of conscience in a supersized awakening way. Enough about that as Sylvia would say.

When Pope Francis went ahead with the Canonization of Pope John Paul II, I knew it was not good news for victims and survivors of clergy abuse.

I’m optimistic that the tide for the victims of clergy abuse and their supporters is slowing turning their way and we will see changes for the good.

Just because I’m not a practicing Catholic Mike doesn’t mean I don’t care for the practicing Catholics.
After all they are my family, friends, brothers and sisters.

  5. Mike Fitzgerald says:

    Lina;
Please do not presume that I don’t care for Catholics, if that’s what you mean. What I don’t care for is hypocrisy in it’s raw form.
There is a term referred to – “putting oneself in an occasion to sin” is just as damaging as sinning in itself.
I just have difficulty accepting that a pope/cardinal would put himself in this circumstance.
I don’t have a problem with the pope having a close and emotional friendship with a married woman.
I DO have a problem with this matter being a closely guarded secret! If nothing is wrong here, why keep it a secret?
This is exactly what has landed the church in such hot water in recent years, and it appears they are not learning.
I admire anyone who has a staunch faith, and do not intend to denigrate it. However, when this faith is weakened and compromised by those who purport to uphold and enforce it, how much integrity is left?
Most of my friends, and all of my family are Catholics. The fact that I chose to object to some behaviours I see in ordained Catholics should not be a basis for assuming that I am denigrating their faith, or just plain don’t care for them.
For those who are interested, I am making efforts to regain some faith. During this process, I have some very hard and direct questions that need to be answered. An old acquaintance is helping me out with this. Mike.

    • Lina says:

Mike said: “Please do not presume that I don’t care for Catholics, if that’s what you mean. ..”
      ———
Let me clarify what I meant, I was thinking about my own struggles during a time I had with other practicing Catholics.

I am truly sorry if my post came across to you the way Mike.

I’m happy you spoke up so to clear up any misunderstanding.

You stated you are making efforts to regain some faith.

I sincerely wish you well in the process.

      Lina

  6. Sylvia says:

    Oh my…
    No surprise really…
The next courtdate for Father John Sullivan is:

12 April 2016: 09:30 am, “to be spoken to,” courtroom #101, North Bay, Ontario court house (360 Plouffe Street)

Please keep the complainant in your prayers

    • BC says:

The real purpose of the ancient Roman custom of crucifixion was not to kill per se; the killing machine that were it’s legions would have done it much more efficiently. Crucifixion was designed to humiliate it’s victims and caution others who would challenge Rome.

The victims of clerical abuse are our crucified for our times.

  7. Mike Fitzgerald says:

    BC;
Exactly! How dare anyone challenge Rome. It isn’t tolerated. Mike.

  8. PJ says:

And now I can add that my court case is scheduled for April 4th in Sudbury. A Canadian Spotlight is possible.

  9. Craig Fournier says:

At 6 years old I was introduced to Father Sullivan at St. Margaret’s church in Midland ontario under the watchful eye of the archbishop of Canada.
In my first year of service in 1978 to 1979 i suffered under the hands of this man.
He disappeared for some time then re-appeared int into my life as a teenagero
