also Normand Pagé (Father Normand Pagé)

priest Diocese of Ottawa, Ontario. Ordained 1956 (8-6-56 )  2005 charged with two counts of gross indecency,  two charges of gross indecency, two counts of sexual assault and two counts of attempted sexual assault on  boys age 14 to 18 between 1976 and 2002.  The offences are alleged to have transpired at Page home in Chelsea and in the Laurentians.  Outcome of charges unknown but media reports indicate he started giggling when told not to communicate with the alleged victims and he was ordered off for a psychiatric evaluation.

According to media reports, before his retirement, Father Pagé was director of the Office of Liturgy for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa, taught religious studies at the University of Ottawa, and from 1965 to 1997 lectured on the history of religious architecture and sacred art.  At some point in time served as director of the department of Relgious Education at Ottawa U and as vice-dean of the university’s faculty of arts. For years, Father Pagé conducted public tours of Notre Dame Basilica in Ottawa.

From his addresses over the years it seems he lived in Wakefield, Quebec while serving in the Ottawa Archdiocese.  It also looks as though he died in either late 2009 or early  2010.

Priest charged with sexual assault

Judge orders psychiatric evaluation of former high-ranking church official

The Ottawa Citizen

Dave Rogers

A former high-ranking official in Ottawa’s Roman Catholic archdiocese charged with sexually assaulting boys has been sent for a psychiatric examination after he grinned and giggled in Gatineau court yesterday.

Police arrested Rev. Norman Page, 73, at his Chelsea home on Thursday. He faces two charges of gross indecency, two counts of sexual assault and two counts of attempted sexual assault on juveniles between 1976 and 2002.

Sgt. Manuel Bandeira, of the Municipalite Regionale de Conte des Collines police, said yesterday the alleged sexual assaults involved boys between the ages of 14 and 18, and took place in Chelsea, where the priest lives, and in the Laurentians.

Before his retirement, Father Page was director of the Office of Liturgy for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa.

He also taught religious studies at the University of Ottawa, lecturing on the history of religious architecture and sacred art, from 1965 until his retirement in 1997.

At one time, he served as director of the department and as vice-dean of the university’s faculty of arts.

The Ottawa newspaper Le Droit awarded Father Page its Prix Litteraire for his book, La Cathedrale Notre-Dame d’Ottawa, published by the University of Ottawa Press, in 1988.

For years, Father Page conducted public tours of Notre Dame Basilica in Ottawa.

In court Thursday, the slightly built, grey-bearded priest wore a light brown suede jacket. He stood quietly in the prisoner’s dock while the charges were read.

But he suddenly began giggling when he was told he must not attempt to communicate with the alleged victims.

Judge Serge Laurin remanded Father Page to the Centre Hospitalier Pierre-Genest in Gatineau until April 18 for a psychiatric examination.

Father Page’s lawyer, Roger Landry, said afterwards that he had been unable to communicate with his client before the court appearance.

Does anyone in the Ottawa are know what became of the charges against Father Page? I wonder if he was declared unfit to stand trial?

Father Page was a familiar name in the Ottawa Archdiocese. According to the paper he was in charge of Liturgy for the archdiocese. In fact he was in charge of Liturgy for the French sector. Father Corbin Eddy, an American priest who came to Ottawa many years ago and suddenly returned to the States about 10 years ago was in charge of the English sector. Given the bilingual nature of the archdiocese without doubt the two frequently worked together, but Page’s area of responsibility was the French sector.

Father Pagé was never able to stand trial and died while institutionalized sometime in 2011. It is a well-known fact that his crimes were certainly not limited to the charges that were laid. At least on one occasion he settled a large civil suit outside of court. His crimes appear to have been sweep under the proverbial rug by Ottawa’s Roman Catholic Archdiocese and the University of Ottawa. As to my knowledge, no public statement was ever given by either of these organizations with regard to Father Pagé. More importantly, no apologies or acknowledgement of his abuse within these organizations ever took place.
