35 Kids Enjoy Rehearsals

tape each session and replay it to learn their mistakes.

LIVE BAND

Charlene McInnis finds it more exciting to work with a live band. “In Petawawa it was more like a pantomime”, she says. “They played the record and we acted out the parts.”

Hang-ups? Well a production this size is bound to have a few. The main problem is transporting the equipment back and forth to the Hail. Some of the parents are taking care of this end of things and they’ve been promised front row seats on opening night.

As for costumes, these are being made by the girls, who have provided their own material. Some of the boys are costume designers.

Scheduled for presentation on Good Friday. “Jesus Christ – Superstar” will be performed at St.  Mary’s Chapel on the Base “because it provides the right atmosphere.” Father Malenfant, Base Chaplain, has given his permission to have the musical presented right on the altar. The Church will resound to the strains of “Hosanna Heysanna Sanna Sanna Ho.” Admission is free – it’s open to the public.

Father John L. MacKenzie, S.J., one of the top Scripture Scholars in the Church today, has written that one can come to know Jesus better from the Rock Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, than from anything written in centuries.

DEDICATION

Father Danny Mills says: “We are impressed with the dedication of our teenagers who are spending several hours a week on their project. We are grateful too, to the understanding parents who are kind enough to store and haul musical equipment.”

What will the kids do once this is over? Jim thinks they’ll have a real sense of accomplishment, for one thing. They might even try another Rock Opera. This wouldn’t surprise me in the least. After hours of strenuous practice, their idea of a break is another rock session.

Father Daniel Mills discusses a technicality with Jim McDonald, director of the Rock Opera Jesus Christ Superstar. Jim mans the volume of the numerous microphones that pick up the sound from the band, the chorus, and the soloists. The electronic sound system has volume to spare.

Performing in this production of JC Superstar was an absolute hi-lite
of my teenage years in Oromocto. The very first meeting was held in the basement of St. Paul’s Catholic Church and there were seven people , including myself at this initial meeting and of course it snowballed from there. I live in Alberta, and have for the past 38 years. My brother Hugh, also in the production, lives in Alberta as well. Because our parents still live in N.B. we
return every year- New Brunswick is in our blood; the whole 38 years I have lived here I have never stopped missing the place, and my time as part of the JC
Superstar Production is one of my fondest memories.

I am in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I am retired from the Federal Government. Sorry took so long to respond. I just did not expect to hear from anyone.

I admit that that was the best time of my life, other than my children.
