Pembroke priest arrested and charged

Pembroke Daily Observer  29 February 2012

By ANTHONY?DIXON editor@thedailyobserver.ca

RENFREW – Father Daniel M. Miller, 67, a priest of the Diocese of Pembroke, has been arrested and charged by members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Renfrew County Crime Unit with sexual assault offences dating back several decades.

According to the OPP, the offences occurred against, then pre-teenage boys and an adult male, between 1970 and 1980.

Rev. Miller was arrested on Feb. 29, 2012 and charged with three counts of gross indecency and three counts of indecent assault against a male.

He has been released from custody on a promise to appear and officer-in-charge undertaking. He is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Renfrew on March 28, 2012.

The investigation is continuing under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

The Daily Observer attempted to contact the OPP for more information but calls and emails were not returned by press time.

A news release issued on behalf of the Diocese of Pembroke Wednesday night stated that Rev. Miller has not been participating in public ministry for over a decade. He has been living in Pembroke.

Rev. Miller was ordained in Renfrew in 1969 and served briefly in Eganville, with other positions in Arnprior, Deep River and Petawawa, prior to 1999.

“The Diocese of Pembroke prays that the truth concerning this matter may be brought to light and extends support to any parties concerned in this case,” said the Most Reverend Michael Mulhall, the Bishop of Pembroke, in an email statement.

The release stated that the “…Diocese of Pembroke will continue to offer its complete cooperation with civil officials as the process unfolds and will encourage and support the healing process for all parties concerned following the resolution of the case.”

The investigation is continuing under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch. Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact the Renfrew County OPP Crime Unit at 613-432-3211 or 1-888-310-1122.

    • Miecul says:

I see it’s another youth from The Deep River area. He was in Arnprior longer than he was in Deep River. Only one came forward from there so far, or did he just up and quit. Maybe it’s not there time yet. If I were Miller I think I would tell the Police everyone I victimized. He could end up going in and out of jail for the rest of his life. Is that a bad thing or a good thing. I don’t know but it does cost us all a lot of money. The only ones benefiting from his and other pedophiles priests are the lawyers.

      • Suzanne Herrick-Lee says:

Good question about Arnprior, in the statement of facts when he
        /Miller
plead guilty to the five victims, it was stated by the Crown that he admitted culpability to an Arnprior Person, who could not be located, so there are others from there for sure,
As for costs, one can not, in my opinion, associate repeat court costs with what it will cost the Diocese and taxpayers….All victims deserve their day in court to bring some sort of closure to their on going life memories of what happened to them… In the scope of wasted government monies, locally, provincially and federally, taking these peadophiles to court time and time again needs to happen over and over again,
You sure are on the mark about the lawyers, after hearing Carew’s questioning of the victims when they gave their impact statements, I really don’t know how they live with themselves…
I was in court for those statements, most of which Sylvia has posted here, it took me several days to shed the heaviness in my heart from what I heard and saw, the body language, the tone of voice of these victims and families, the sheer courage they had to come forward… It was hard to be there to hear these grown men have to relate what happened to them as children, and especially for me to hear the Arnprior victim, whom I knew as a student, I now realize in retrospect that I observed him grooming this young boy, taking him to Frasers Mens Wear buying him clothing, us all thinking how kind and generous he was!!!! This young boy didn’t need this in his life to add to the challenges he already had….ohh…he knew which ones to target for sure,, and all the parishioners in Arnprior, myself included, thinking what a great priest our Fr Miller was!!!! Boy, were we hoodwinked….but, it is those victims, those young boys, that were completely tossed to this wolf!!! You CAN be SURE there are others from Arnprior

      • Lina says:

As Sylvia stated, another struggling soul has found courage to come forward. Good for him!

As for Fr. Dan Miller coming clean about all those he victimized that would be good and it would spare a lot people trouble and grief. I believe his lawyer would advise Fr. Miller against volunteering any information that would likely give Fr. Miller more jail time. It can also open the door for more lawsuits against the Pembroke Diocese.

There had to be other priests/clergy in the diocese that knew something about Fr. Dan Miller’s illicit escapades. These priests must have heard, at least some complaints from different parishioners and even from other priests. It’s a mystery how Fr. Dan Miller got away with all of his evil actions for so long without other clergy members knowing something about it, that would even include Bishops.

How many knew about Fr. Miller’s dark secrets? How many turn a blind eye to it or even made excuses for Fr. Miller’s behavior?

I’m just saying there is something very fishy going on in the Pembroke Diocese in the way they were handling their priests who were abusing the young and other vulnerable poor souls.

  1. Sylvia says:

Thank you Ceilidhe for the links, and thanks to those who sent them to me privately. I think I have posted the articles I have to date.

I can assure you all that it did my heart good to get emails today advising new charges against Father Daniel Miller, Not that it ever does the heart good to see more charges against a priest, but that it does the heart good to know that another soul who has been struggling has found the courage to come forward.

  2. Ceilidhe says:

Lina I believe that some of the priests and the Bishop knew about Dan Miller’s abuse of young boys. Why else would they suddenly pull him out of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish and squirrel him away at Our Lady of Lourdes ‘residence’? Why did he suddenly stop being the pastor at Bishop Smith Catholic High School at the same time? Because the Pembroke diocese KNEW he was a child molester! Sickening.

    • Lina says:

      Ceilidhe,
I agree many priests and bishop(s) knew about Fr. Dan Miller. It wouldn’t surprise me about a certain number of nuns knowing about Father Dan as well.

Priests golf and take trips together, they go out to eat together, go on missions, retreats, walks, talk on the phone, use many different social networking like the internet etc…

I do get priests talk about God and all kinds of the divine and earthly stuff also.

It does stand to reason these priests/clergy from the Diocese of Pembroke pretty well know a lot of things, stuff about each other. Each priest/bishop knows who are the hard working clergy and those who slack off in their duties, who are the drunks, the gamblers, substance abuse users, over eaters, those who get a little something on the side and who the molesters were and so forth.

Priests were told to mind their own business, keep quiet and let it go. These priests agreed ‘with their lips are sealed attitude’ fearing reprisal from their bishop and yet NO fear from God.

Thanks to the courage of many clergy abuse victims coming forward telling their stories and seeking justice.
We are being educated about the dark side of the covering up of these crimes against the innocent in the Pembroke Diocese.

I remember a conversation I had with a Catholic Deacon earlier this year who’s is originally from Pembroke (still has family in Pembroke) who happens to be ministering in another Diocese.

He shared with me this……..if I knew what he knew about the corruption in the Pembroke Diocese it would make my head spin around.

This is ONE of SEVERAL reasons I support victims in the Pembroke Diocese. These poor souls right from the beginning didn’t stand a chance Ceilidhe.

I am so sorry for those clergy abuse victims whose voices were not heard, crushed, silenced and NOT believed.

Shame on all those who took part in these crimes in any way and still do at this present time.
Your days of keeping up that so call clear conscience of yours are numbered.
Your sickening evil secrets will be revealed one step at time as more courageous victims come forward.

  3. Sylvia says:

Tomorrow morning’s court date for Father Miller on the new charges is 09:00 am, courtroom #2

  4. Sylvia says:

Nine months and 10 days. Exactly what the Crown asked for.

Father Dan Miller was taken into custody, handcuffed and led out of the courtroom. His destination is unknown, but, he will be behind bars.

More to come. I just got home but did want to pass on the word to those who are waiting for the news.

  5. Anne says:

Please everyone – STOP calling him Father – why does he deserve that – he is where he belongs for now.

    • Lina says:

I seriously get what you are saying Anne.

Sadly, the fact is Dan Miller is still a priest and Father is still his title.
      It’s unbelievable but true.

After the court cases are all over Fr. Dan Miller will probably be defrock but that also takes time.
Look how long the Vatican is taking their time in what to do about Msgr. Robert Borne’s status?
At this moment he is still a Monsignor.

    • PJ says:

I’ll never call them that again..in my mind they’re called collars and if guilty pervert collars. That the church still allows them to use that name after they have molested a child is shameful. And for those still waiting for the new pope to take action against these perverts? He’s been pope for about a year and he hasn’t said a word about how the issue should be resolved once and for all…nothing.

  6. Ceilidhe says:

I wonder what happened in court regarding the second set of charges laid against him for sexually assaulting children?

  7. Sylvia says:

Father Daniel Miller had a court date at the Pembroke courthouse this morning at 11 am “to be spoken to.”

I won’t be able to find out until tomorrow afternoon when the next court date is, but am curious as to the 11 am start time. That’s a little unusual.

Meanwhile please keep the complainant in your prayers. Every court date, no matter how seemingly insignificant to others, is always of of great interest and concern to every complainant, and usually also to his/her family.

    • Former Parishoner says:

Sylvia, the 11 am appearance time probably is scheduled with transporting him from the Inness Road facility to Pembroke for the appearance… Just my thoughts,

  8. Sylvia says:

You’re probably absolutely right. But, if that’s the case and he was going to appear in court today there must be something going on other than the ‘revolving door’ and setting another date “to be spoken to”?

I suppose, as usual, we shall see….

  9. Sylvia says:

Father Miller’s next courtdate on his new charges is for a Preliminary Hearing on 20 March 2014:

20 March 2014: 09:30 am, Pembroke Ontario courthouse, Preliminary Hearing

I don’t know how many days the courtroom is booked for the hearing. It may be just one day, or could be several days. I will try to find out.

A preliminary hearing is open to the public. All testimony and evidence at the hearing will be under a publication ban – that means that media can not report what is said, nor can anyone in attendance blog or publicly disclose what is said during the hearing.

Those who plan to attend mark your calendars now. Please keep the complainant in your prayers.

  10. Sylvia says:

I have just been advised that Thursday’s courtdate is for a pretrial hearing NOT a preliminary hearing. There is a world of difference. A pretrial hearing is NOT open to the public. A pretrial hearing makes more sense. In light of the examination for discovery, a pretrial hearing makes more sense. It seemed strange to me that an examination for discovery would lead to a preliminary hearing.

There is a good chance I will not be able to double check this tomorrow – I suggest anyone who was planning to attend check with the courthouse. I don’t think this Thursday court date will be open to the public – I think rather it will be lawyers haggling behind closed doors with a judge. If anyone know or finds out any more please post a comment or let me know.

  11. Sylvia says:

The Father Dan Miller charges are now being heard in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

There will be a judicial pre-trial hearing on the Father Dan Miller charges at 10 am. 16 April 2014. This is NOT open to the public. I will still draw the date to your attention that day or the day before. Even though these pre-trials are not open to the public they are difficult days for the complainants – I therefore keep tabs on the dates as a reminder to keep the complainants in our prayers.

  12. Sylvia says:

A trial date has been set for October, and there are two days of pre-trial motions scheduled for September. Both are open to the public. Here is the info:

15 & 16 September 2014: 10 am, Pre-trial motions (in court and open to the public) Pembroke court house (297 Pembroke Street East)

    14 & 15 October 2014: 10 am, TRIAL Pembroke court house

  13. Sylvia says:

Acquitted! He got off. Keep the complainant in your prayers. More when I get home.

  14. Appalled says:

I am absolutely appalled at the fact that Father Miller was acquitted today. Father Miller was our parish and school priest when I was growing up in Arnprior. Many of kids in my class were altar servers and spent a great deal of time with him. I never liked Father Miller….hated going to confession with him and never EVER felt comfortable around him. I guess my instincts were right but to know he is getting away with what he did sickens me. So sorry for the victim(s).

  15. Suzanne Herrick-Lee says:

You are right, Appalled, he got off on this one, my heart is so saddened for the victim, I was in court for the two day trial. His defence lawyer managed to twist and turn things in such a way, so as to create reasonable doubt.
He hoodwinked so many of us and there are still those who refuse to believe his pedophiles crimes, but, for those doubters, I say, for the next case, go to the court, and listen to the reality. There will be more!!!!

  16. Miecul says:

From what I heard, the Judge(s) Crown(s) need to be schooled in memory regression and the effects there of. He was Acquitted and wasn’t found not guilty.

Suzanne I’m sure (hope) more will come forward. He was in Deep River for what 5 or 6 years and there were 4 or 5 that came forward. He was in Arnprior for 18 years, he didn’t just stop. There are many more boys there, but it’s not their time yet. I hope they will find the strength to do so in the future.

  17. Disenchanted says:

well I see that the powers that be in this Renfrew diocese have chosen to take the “low road” in all of this by condoning a lawyer to advise miller to “deny, deny, deny” in order to avoid a guilty verdict and stay out of prison. are the Sisters being expected to continue harbouring this pedophile? How about he go and take up residence at the bishop’s house.
it is an obvious ploy on the part of the defence that if you don’t admit it and there are no witnesses or proof, then he can’t be found guilty. well I just wonder how these people manage to sleep in their cozy beds.
I thought that the “Christian” way was to speak the truth and great comfort comes when one admits they have made mistakes and expresses remorse and apologizes and makes amends. I must have missed a lesson in my catechism class back in the day.
a clue was left in an article. I am pretty sure I know the victim – he does not deserve this.
a question for the church leaders – when you say that you continue to keep in your prayers all those affected – do you exclude the latest victim?? How exactly does this work anyways – must be very confusing to your higher power when he is sifting through all this mess as to who exactly is to be included in the prayers and who is not.
all this just reaffirms my choices I have made in the last few years!
I just finished watching a documentary on Netflix – Secrets of the Vatican – to sum up – Pope JP – looked the other way; Pope Benedict – completely overwhelmed and heartbroken about all he found out in investigations and feeling too weak and old to deal with all this – he did the best he could by stepping away; The current Pope Francis – amazingly the hierarchy got it right by electing him – a kind and reverent and humble man who is not afraid to stand up to the corruption – I wish him much strength.
and for the most recent victim of miller – you did the right thing by coming forward and please know that there are many people out here who are sending you positive thoughts and wishes.

Wow. Disenchanted hit all of the nails right on the head; most of all, from the religion B.S. I was unfortunately brainwashed with when I was growing up under the influence of that scumbag miller: ‘admit your mistakes and ask for forgiveness’. And throw ‘monsignor’ (what a joke) bourne into the fire while your at it. disgusting perverts should burn in hell, but I’m not stupid enough to believe such pathetic garbage. How DARE they. What an absolute crock of shyte. Your whole […] diocese should be ashamed of itself. Some of you misdirected and simple minded perverts should read a science book. Start with ” The God Delusion” by Richard Dawkins. Man , I am so ashamed I was brought up Catholic , and you people should be too.

  18. Janet Lance says:

Did he has his priesthood taken away from him. He should have. I grew up in Deep River and remember him in Deep River at our church.

  19. Lynn Lefebvre says:

I heard that it was in the parish bulletin a week or so ago, that Father Daniel Miller
was defrocked by the Pope and the Pembroke Bishop and is now out of the church.

    • bc says:

Indeed the press release to this effect is here:
      http://www.pembrokediocese.com/site/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=1&Itemid=59&lang=english

Six years. The Church tolerated this clerical pervert for six years after the conviction and sentence he received. But for the public outrage surrounding this case and Sylvia`s blogging about it; I am totally convinced that Miller would still be on the payroll of this trans-national charity scam.

      • Miecul says:

bc, I can’t find the article or the bulletin. Bad link it says.

        • bc says:

          It works for me(!)
Here`s the full text of the press release:

          PRESS RELEASE
          Pembroke, August 14, 2019

THE DIOCESE OF PEMBROKE ANNOUNCES THE DISMISSAL OF DANIEL MILLER FROM THE CLERICAL STATE
The Diocese of Pembroke announced on August 14, 2019, that Daniel Miller, a priest of the Diocese, has been dismissed from the clerical state. Dismissal from the clerical state means the person is no longer considered a cleric and may not exercise his ministry as a priest. Following his criminal conviction in 2013 for sexual abuse of five minors, the matter was referred to the Holy See, which initiated a canonical penal process.
Archbishop Mulhall sincerely apologizes to the survivors for the abuse they have suffered and for the pain they have carried.
