Priest in court on sex charges

The Vancouver Sun

A 63-year-old Roman Catholic priest was charged Wednesday in New Westminster provincial court with six counts relating to sexual offences involving females under the age of 16 years.

Rev. John McCann, a priest since June 5, 1955, was released on bail and is to appear in court again on Sept. 4.

The offences are alleged to have taken place while McCann was serving as a priest at St. Augustine’s Church in Vancouver from 1972 to 1973 and at St. Peter’s Church in New Westminster from 1975 to 1979.

McCann also served as parish priest in Nootka from 1959 to 1963; at St. Patrick’s Church in Lethbridge, Alta., from 1963 to 1970; at Fort St. John from 1981 to 1983; at Edmonton, Alta., from 1984 to 1990, and at Ganges on Saltspring Island from August 1990 until October 1990, at which time he was removed from duty.

New West cops charge priest with sex assault

The Province (Vancouver, B.C.)

New Westminster police have charged a 63-year-old Roman Catholic priest with sexual assault.

Father John McCann, 63, a priest since 1955, faces six counts involving girls under 16.

Police said the alleged offences occurred while McCann was serving as a priest at St. Augustine’s church in Vancouver between 1972 and 1973 and at St. Peter’s church in New Westminster between 1975 and 1979.

McCann served as a priest in Nootka, from 1959 to 1963, at St. Patrick’s church in Lethbridge, Alta., from 1963 to 1970, in Fort St. John from 1981 to 1983, in Edmonton from 1984 to 1990 and finally in Ganges on Saltspring Island from August to October 1990.

“The investigation into these allegations is continuing,” New Westminster police Sgt. Bob Kraiger said yesterday.

He said anyone having information about the alleged incidents should contact New Westminster police.

McCann has been released on bail.

Most of the allegations of sexual abuse in B.C. against Roman Catholic priests have centred in Interior communities such as Nelson.

Concerned officials there formed a sexual-abuse task force to investigate charges of sexual assault by clergymen.

In June, RCMP charged a former Cranbrook parish priest with sex attacks dating back to 1961 and 1963. Rev. Ian Theodore Cooper, 57, became the sixth priest from the region to be charged with sex offences.

Among the others charged was Nelson Msgr. John Monaghan, then 81, who was sentenced to four years in prison for 14 counts of indecent assault and three counts of sexual assault on young girls.

Which parishes did Father McCann work in a pastor while he was in Edmonton?

  2. Sylvia says:

I don’t know which parishes he was in in Edmonton Felix. I know that at one point his address was: 1611 – 98 St., Edmonton, Alberta

Can anyone help out on this? Does anyone know what parishes Father McCann served or assisted in the Archdiocese of Edmonton between 1985 and 1990.

    • 1 abandoned sheep says:

Sylvis, you wonder why the Archdiocese would send a bigger player to Blessed Sacrament than to Mt. Carmel? It is quite simple.
The report was that Blessed Sacrament has 8,000 parishioners on a weekend. Mt. Carmel might have 600.
The Diocese taxes parishes on their income. Lets say people who go to Blessed Sacrament give an average of $300 per year, that comes to $2,500.00 per year- or $375,000 for the Diocese. Mt Carmel, using the same
gestimate would take in about $180,000 per year, and $27,000 to the Diocese.

That means a lot more money for the many trips of the AB, his vicars etc, comes from Blessed Sacrament, therefore it is more important.

Here at Annunciation Parish we expect to have one of the Vicars, , Muldoon, taking over here as Pastor later this year. This after he had to be removed from Good Shepherd over his unwillingness to obey the AB about kneelers instead of comfee chairs which Vicar Muldoon prefers.
God only knows what will happen at Annunciation— perhaps toilets we have to put a coin in for?
Has anyone asked who paid for the food Bishop Lahey ate at the Archdiocese residence as he languished , waiting for his trial? |Or is it just a given that Bishops travel as they wish, eat where they wish, and the unsuspecting dumb parishioners will continue to fund the processes?
If ever these travesties are to stop, the Parishioners are going to have to draw back what they are putting in the collection baskets. Reduce the money, and the Bishops MIGHT listen to the cry of the POOR parishioners.
We are basically alone now, abandoned by our Shepherds who are away, or blogging or attending concerts, or God knows what- but are to tied up to look after their flocks.
      It is SOOOOOOO sickening!

Looks like they’ve paved that paradise, Sylvia, and put up a parking lot. The Edmonton address seems to be the South Edmonton Common shopping complex now. The sale of that property must have brought in some dough.

  4. Sylvia says:

Thanks jeepers. I wonder what it was? Possibly an Oblate residence of some sort? Does anyone know?

  5. proudsurvivor says:

A friend of mine recalls that McCann was a frequent visitor to Little Flower Academy when she was there in the early 70’s. She remembers him saying mass and that all of the students liked him. She said he wasn’t your typical “stiff and starchy” priest, but would joke and laugh with them. Referring to the LFA logo on their uniforms, he would call the girls “Little Fuzzy Apes”.

  6. proudsurvivor says:

Sylvia, you had asked what parishes McCann was in, in Edmonton. I know that he wasn’t stationed at a parish while there at all, but rather was assigned to a “Mission Team”. He would go into parishes for a week at a time. Perhaps using him as an “itinerant priest” was the Oblates way of trying to prevent him from building the relationships with families he relied on to groom his victims. Having seen Fort St. John where McCann was sent after his assignments in Vancouver, I can’t help but believe that the Oblates were aware of his predatory behaviour.

Proud Survivor, you may be interested in the following.
Last week. Jack McCann appeared at a lunch after a funeral at Mount Carmel Church.
At some point he asked a memeber of the Parish if they would like to hear what he could tell them about the Pastor, Fr. Liang. The person said no emphatically, and quickly moved away.
He also had a threat againsy his life, so he moved back into an Oblate House near St. Paul University. He even conned amember of Mt. Carmel Parish into getting rid of his furniture for him..He has been rude to several members of the Parish since his outing, I detected haughtiness in him the first time I met him. GOD Bless.

  7. proudsurvivor says:

1 abandoned sheep, thanks for the information. Obviously he must have survived his bypass surgery. Were you in attendance at this event? I really have no interest in hearsay, but if you were there, I would want to know if he was representing himself as a priest (i.e. wearing a roman collar), or was he dressed in civvies? I would hope that parishioners would take the time to confront him, rather than just shun, or avoid him. I recognize that one mightn’t feel that a funeral was the appropriate place to do so, but when he brought up the subject of Fr. Liang, that would be the perfect opportunity to turn the tables, and ask him how he can act as a priest when he has lived such duplicitous life. I also feel that with what we’re hearing about priests protecting priests, in order to avoid revealing their own crimes, it might have been wise to listen to what he and to say about Fr. Liang.

  9. 1 abandonded sheep says:

I wa not present, but those who informed me were. He was in civies as he always is. He obviously knew some of the family of the deceased, and he also knew Fr. Liang does not attend the luncheons after funerals.
On the subject of Fr. Liang, he only became a Priest about 6 or 7 years ago. Before that , he was a doctor with some specialty in the Canadian Armed Forces. McCann would have little knowledge of him. They never really got along.
As for people confronting him, all of them just feel betrayal that he was in their midst without their knowledge, and disgust for what he is and what he did.
He is not particularly welcome back in the OMI community either.

    http://lethbridgejournal.com/library/062311.pdf

I found this article while doing a bit of google searching last night. It is written by Mark Campbell who also appears to be a bit of a Lethbridge local media personality working for Global. The article is dated June 23, 2011, just slightly more than one month after the cross country media coverage of McCann being removed from service at Mount Carmel Church on May 8. Campbell details the training he received from McCann and he states that Fr. McCann was his favorite priest. This light-hearted nostalgic reflection with no reference to the harm McCann caused is shocking to me.
It’s my understanding that during his time in Lethbridge, McCann ran a youth group of over 200 kids. I believe he had a core group of favorites (the SPEDAPSO that Mr. Campbell refers to). To be clear, there are no criminal convictions against McCann from his time in Lethbridge. At the time of the police investigation 20 years ago, I was told they would publish a call for victims in Lethbridge, and that at least two people were interviewed. One had clearly indicated that she was a victim, but was not at a place where she could give evidence. Another was not a victim, and it is my understanding that to this day she and McCann remain loyal friends, and that she accepts his story that he was an innocent victim that only pled guilty to the charges based on advice from his lawyers.
About three years after McCann’s sentencing, an interview of me in the Vancouver Sun triggered a number of phone calls from various supporters and detractors. Awoman called from Lethbridge and told me that she had been part of the youth group. One day McCann had cornered her behind a door and tried to French kiss her. I always think that if that had happened to one person there, that there must be similar stories.

Perhaps it is important for the people of Lethbridge to maintain their storybook image of McCann as the favorite wonderful priest, and Mark Campbell is just doing his job. I myself believe the truth will set you free.

  11. Sylvia says:

Thanks Leona. I posted the article on the page.

I think it is actually quite possible that Mark Campbell has never heard that McCann was convicted, or that, despite the conviction, he was assisting at Masses and hearing confessions in parishes in the Archdiocese of Ottawa. I have frequently been surprised to learn over the years how little people in one area of the country know of convictions of priests in another. It is one of many reasons I set up the data base.

I will call the Lethbridge Journal to see if I can speak to the Mark Campbell.

  12. Sylvia says:

The Journal office seems to closed until early March. I sent an email and hope it reaches Mark Campbell.

  13. Sylvia says:

This morning I received the following email from Mark Campbell:

    Hi Sylvia..

It’s Mark Campbell in Lethbridge. I was forwarded your e-mail about Father McCann and I was absolutely stunned and saddened. I had no idea he was convicted for sexual abuse and I feel horrible for any victim in Lethbridge who had to revisit a horrible event because they were reminded about him in my article. Please convey my deepest sympathies. My experience with Father McCann was a positive one at St. Pat’s Church. Had I known about the charges, I would not have included his name in what I had hoped was a light-hearted piece.

    Most sincerely

    Mark Campbell

    Lethbridge.

  14. Leona says:

Thanks for your work in informing Mark Campbell and for posting his response, Sylvia. This brings a whole new level to my understanding of clergy sexual abuse and it’s impact on the victims, vs that of the perpetrator. I have often heard it said (and some people have written on this site) that bringing up a sexual abuse allegation can ruin someone’s reputation. Obviously up until now, McCann’s conviction had little impact on him, at least in Mark Campbell’s mind, and one can only assume that many people were never informed of the damage McCann did. Somehow or other his people still have warm nostalgic memories of him when they think of the church. I’m really struggling with what this means, and can only thank you once again for the work you do to keep people informed. I get that Mark was only writing a light-hearted piece. I wonder if he would have the courage to write the informative piece that needs to be written now.

    • 1 abandoned sheep says:

Leona, in your struggle , try to not make everything about McCann personal. He has lived a long life, and many things about him we will never know.
This in no way is to minimize his manipulation and attacks on you.
The reporter in Lethbridge, and others, whose experience with McCann will be so completely different from yours. Because of that they see him in a different and cleaner way.
It is no ones fault- it JUST IS !
Please continue on the positive track you have been on.
An expression of a few years ago may make it easier when you run into these bumps in your path. Remember diferent strokes for different folks ! GOD Bless.

  15. Leona says:

    1 abandoned sheep,

I really don’t see this as personal at all. I truly see this as a collective issue. If we as a society do not come to understand what a perpetrator looks like, and how they are able to be so deceptive, then how do we protect our children and grandchildren from them?
Without McCann’s, or any perpetrators history revealed, e.g. Del Bianco, Marshall, and all others that Sylvia has listed on her site, they retain there same status in our communities and are able to have access into our homes. Yes, hold on to your positive memories, but be willing to see the truth in all it’s shades and if you are in the position to enlighten people (e.g. A media personality, or a priest in a pulpit) then have the courage to reveal the truth! It is only then that we will make a difference.

  16. Leona says:

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I wanted to share a bit about the complexities of sexual abuse and its rhizomatic effect throughout the life of the survivor.
Around 35 years after the abuse and 20 years after McCann was convicted, after years of therapy and healing, I am still surprised at how it shows up in my life, like a Yucca plant rearing it’s head in my garden after I dug down 6 feet to remove all remnants of its roots.
Last week we began demolishing our kitchen in order to make room for a “new to us” kitchen. An off-hand, meant to be funny comment from my son who was being very helpful, provoked some very intense feelings which I failed to acknowledge. As the week progressed, I found my good spirits gradually being obscured by intense feelings that just didn’t match what was happening in my present life. I woke up with a start on Friday morning and the memories of being a “carpenter’s helper” to Jack McCann on spring breaks, and in the summer came flooding back. While it was one of his ways to gain access and isolate his victims, it was a place where I felt competent and developed some skills. Painful memories entwined with positive ones. No wonder I’d “shelved” those experiences. I’m fortunate to have the self-awareness and the support systems to process these unwelcome assertions in my life, but it definitely takes work.
Just another reason why when people ask “why can’t survivors leave it in the past and move on?” that I say it’s very much my present.

  17. Leona says:

He died still a priest with a Catholic burial.

  18. John says:

It appears there was a mass said in Jack McCann’s honor. I am not impressed.

  19. Tania says:

Re: Fr. Joe Kane, he is the second from the left; NOT Fr. McCann!!! http://www.theinquiry.ca/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/McCann-and-Prendergast-Ottawa-ProLife-OLMC.jpg
Re: Archbishop Ventura: your article of 17 January 201(8)9. He is only being investigated and it is a calumny, to remove him from Dean of the Diplomatic corps in France. Please, do not accuse innocent people.

  20. Tania says:

This picture with five people is still wrong! Fr. Joe Kane (with roses and Our Lady of Guadalupe on his stole) is the second from the left between Fr. Liang and Archbishop Prendergast! He is a very holy priest, now deceased.

  21. Sylvia says:

It looks fine to me Tina.

  22. Leona says:

I don’t know all the priests, I just know that McCann is the fourth from the left. Looking at the picture he is at the archbishop’s left hand.

  23. Tania Padellaro says:

Yes, at the Archbishop right hand, with the stole with Our Lady of Guadalupe and embroidered roses, is Fr. Joe Kane, a holy priest.

  24. Sylvia says:

I think – hopefully, it’s fixed so that there can be no confusion.

Sylvia’s Site and social media generally are risks that the old men who cover-up clerical abuse never saw coming and/or could manage. And the single men who with their sermons on love who know nothing of the fury of a woman’s love should beware. There are no known public relations techniques to damage control your unsilenceable voice Leona. You are something else. You are the real thing. You were better than Oblate Father McCann was when you were a young woman. You are better than all the rest of the Oblate jackals today.

And Bishops should not test a Lioness in the Coliseum.

I just heard about Mcann on the news today ,
it doesn’t seem right to call him a priest when there were real true priest like Father Powers, and good Brothers like Brother Francis and Brother Joe
I was an aulter boy when he came to Saint Peters and he changed my hole life around, not for the better either
Hearing all the comments just brought a flood of memories that I had pushed aside
I’m glad that it’s out there and people now know who he really was

    • bc says:

On the contrary it is right to call Oblate Father McCann a priest because it is the truth; the Church recruits perverts, it shelters them, it trains them, it ordains them, it enables them and it covers-up for them. There is no way to know who is a law abiding member of the clergy and who is a clerical pervert. For it is the greatest show on Earth: up is down, black is white, wrong is right, holy is evil, filth is purity, charity is greed. The Diocese of Vancouver appears to break ranks with it’s clerical perverts (I say appears to because it’s list is incomplete and deception is the Church’s modus operandi) but all the other Dioceses in Canada fully stand behind their clerical perverts. And religious orders endorse theirs 100%.
