LATE BREAKING NEWS FROM THE FRONTENAC COUNTY COURT HOUSE.

A CATHOLIC PRIEST FROM THE KINGSTON-AREA IS GOING TO JAIL FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT.

FATHER RENE LABELLE WAS FOUND GUILTY OF ASSAULTING A TEENAGE BOY MORE THAN A DECADE AGO.

NEWSWATCH’S MORGANNE CAMPBELL WAS AT THE COURT HOUSE THIS AFTERNOON… AS LABELLE LEARNED HIS FATE.

Father Rene Labelle leaves the courthouse in police custody, destined to spend the next 16 months behind bars.

The Priest who remained stoic and unapologetic during his trial cracked a joke to an OPP officer before being put in the back of the cruiser.

John Ecclestone:
I didn’t really have a chance to speak with him um I think he was aware of the possibilities that might unfold and I suspect that he will maintain his strength and his concern.”

In January Justice Ray found the priest guilty on three sex related charges.

It was revealed during the week long trial the Priest sexually abused a teenage boy in his church residence on Wolfe Island back in the mid 2000′s.

The crown maintains Labelle took advantage of the teen and his trust in the Church when he invited him over for a sleep over at the church rectory.

It was there, the victim testified, where the Priest fondled him, and then made him touch him inappropriately.

Morganne Campbell:
“During the hearing the crown suggested a sentence of between 15-21 months in jail — in an effort to send a strong message that these types of crimes will not be tolerated.
However the defense asked the judge to consider a conditional sentence — which is more commonly known as house arrest.
That’s because the defense says the Priest has been deemed a low risk to re offend.”

At the end of the day the judge decided on 16 months in provincial prison and 30 months probation.

The judge explained a conditional sentence would not apply in this case — adding that the offence was not a minor one -and had a detrimental effect on the victim’s family – and the credibility of the church as well.

Father Labelle has also been placed on the sex offender registry for the next ten years. Morganne Campbell CKWS Newswatch Kingston.
