A former West Island Roman Catholic deacon has been sentenced to two years less a day in a provincial jail for child porn offences.

William Kokesch pleaded guilty in February of last year to producing, possessing and distributing child pornography.

At the time of his arrest in December of 2012, police said they had seized more than 2,000 child porn images, along with Internet chat records. Later, the Crown revealed investigators had found nearly 100,000 photos, and more than 2,000 videos of children being sexually exploited — including images of children between one and five years of age being placed in erotic and sexually explicit poses.

The crown cited the “extraordinary” amount of pictures and “outrageous” character of the photos and online conversations as an aggravating factor. The sentence was a joint recommendation by the crown and the defence.

There were no charges that Kokesch himself had any illicit contact with children.

Crown prosecutor Nadine Haviernick told the court that Kokesch said in some of those online chats that he loved to be a pedophile and to have sexual intercourse with young children.

A Montreal deacon charged with producing and distributing child pornography has been sentenced to two years less a day in prison.

William Kokesch received the sentence Tuesday after being arrested in December 2012 and pleading guilty.

Investigators seized more than 2,000 images during a search of his suburban home.

His lawyer, Jeffrey Boro, told reporters that Kokesch had a troubled childhood, but he would not elaborate.

During sentencing, Kokesch read out a letter in which he apologized and asked for forgiveness.

Kokesch, a deacon for a church in the Montreal suburb of Beaconsfield, was also a communications director for the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.

He was arrested by Vancouver police as the result of an investigation into a child pornographer in the city.
