SOURIS, P.E.I. (CP) ‑‑ The Crown has dropped charges of gross indecency and indecent assault against a Roman Catholic priest.
Rev. Paul Egan was scheduled to appear in court Friday for a preliminary hearing.
But RCMP Sgt. Dwight Mullally said the prosecution and police decided to withdraw the charges “due to a change in circumstances involving pertinent evidence of witnesses.”
He declined to elaborate in case the investigation was reopened.
Egan was charged in August following a month‑long investigation into events dating to between 1974 and 1977.

CHARLOTTETOWN (CP) ‑‑ A Roman Catholic priest facing sex charges has been relieved of all church duties.
Rev. Paul Egan has been charged with gross indecency and indecent assault relating to alleged incidents between 1974 and 1978, when Egan was a priest in eastern Prince Edward Island.
The diocese of Charlottetown relieved Egan of his duties Friday and offered him counselling.
A spokesman for the diocese, Rev. Gerald Tingley, said the church has also offered help to the complainant in the case.
Said Bishop Vernon Fougere: the charges are serious and the case has touched Catholics across the province.
This was nothing short of a witch hunt of the worst kind. One of the best Man who ever worn the collar was just wrongfully accused of a crime without a proper investigation. A police officer for 35 years I think I have the right to call a snow job when I see one
Not that this is important Larry, but this was 22 years ago. Did you just hear about this now?
You, as a former police officer, would (and should) well know that sometimes charges are dropped if the Crown does not see a reasonable chance of conviction.
This is NOT a finding of innocence, nor is it a “snow-job” or a “witch hunt”.
