An arrest warrant has been issued for a former Catholic priest facing sex-related charges involving a teenager in northern New Brunswick in the 1980s.

Charles Picot, who is in his late 60s, failed to appear in Bathurst court on Monday to answer to three charges of gross indecency and indecent assault.

Picot, who has twice been convicted of similar charges and acquitted once, was not present due to a medical problem, the courtroom heard.

The judge issued the arrest warrant, but decided to hold onto it until Picot’s next court date at the end of April. If Picot does not show up for court again at that time, the judge will send the police after him.

In 1993, Picot pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. He served seven months in jail.

In 2010, Picot was charged again with indecent assault, involving a 13-year-old boy in Dalhousie in the 1970s.

Picot was acquitted because the judge had doubts about the complainant’s facts.

The Crown appealed, citing the trial judge’s consideration of uncorroborated testimony, and won a new trial.

But Picot appealed to the Supreme Court of Canada, which ruled the acquittal should stand.

Picot was charged again in 2011 with indecent assault involving another 13-year-old boy in Dalhousie. He was convicted and sentenced to 11 months in jail.

Picot left the diocese of Bathurst in 1993. He is not a practising priest.

A former Bathurst area priest will be in court this morning to enter his plea to two counts of indecent assault, one count of gross indecency, as well as one count of sexual assault.

Charles Picot was originally supposed to enter his plea back in November, however a summons was never served to Picot or his lawyer, both in Montreal.

Picot is scheduled to appear in Bathurst court at 9 o’clock.

This is a court appearance related to the new charges laid in November 2013

So the judge issued a warrant for his arrest? Does that mean the judge didn’t believe Picot has medical problems? If that’s the case, why is he letting it sit to end April?

And, if the judge did believe there are medical problems, why did he issue the warrant.

This makes no sense, at least not to me.

There seems to be a trail of carnage behind this creature, somewhat similar to the tail on Haley’s Comet.
I can well guess what his “medical problem” is, although I have to wonder if “His Honour” is of right mind in this matter.
Picot is a fugitive from justice. Why are the police not involved? What’s up, your Honour? His name is Charles Picot, not Jose Silva! Mike.
