Catholic priest faces kid porn charges

The Ottawa Sun

08 July 2009

By AEDAN HELMER, Sun Media

OTTAWA – A local Roman Catholic congregation is stunned to learn one of their own is facing child pornography charges.

Father James Anthony Jordan, 63, a member of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, was arrested Monday and charged with one count of possessing child pornography.

Jordan, who has been serving as a missionary in Kenya since 2006, was arrested by police at the provincial offices of OMI Lacombe Canada on Main St.

Court documents list his address as the Springhurst Residence in Ottawa, which is operated by the Oblates.

OMI Lacombe Canada was founded in 2003 with a focus on helping the poor, particularly through missionary work in developing nations.

Jordan, originally a member of the British Columbia/Yukon chapter of the Oblates, was named director of the New Blessed Joseph Cebula House of Philosophy in the Oblates’ Kenyan mission in Karen, a subdivision of Nairobi.

According to staff at the local Oblates office, Jordan was on leave from the Kenyan mission and was vacationing in Ottawa for the past two weeks.

Staff Sgt. Monique Perras said police made the arrest after a “short investigation.”

Jordan appeared in court Tuesday morning, and was released on a $5,000 bond.

Bail conditions require Jordan to remain at his listed address and to surrender his passport.

He is also barred from accessing pornographic material, a computer, or the Internet, and must not congregate in places where the Internet may be accessed.

According to Rob Meilleur, a layman responsible for the congregation’s business affairs, OMI Lacombe Canada is launching its own internal investigation.

“We’re working with the police on these allegations to see if they’re actually founded or not,” said Meilleur.

“As a priest, he has a personal life, and when something like this arises, we have our own misconduct policy that kicks in that does its own internal investigation.”

Meilleur said the charges stem from a complaint made by an individual who is not a member of the congregation.

The order contacted police on Friday. Jordan was arrested Monday.

According to Meilleur, Father Jordan is a respected member of the order, and is very active in the formation of new priests and brothers.

“I know these days, once you put ‘child pornography’ and ‘church’ in the same sentence, people just go nuts. And we don’t know what it is, so we will be doing our own internal investigation and working with the police,” said Meilleur. “We want to make sure that everything is done right.”

Can you tell me the outcome of the court appearance of Fr. J.A. Jordan OMI on January 10th 2011 in Ottawa?
    In appreciation.

  2. Sylvia says:

When I last tried to get an update the case files had not been returned to the offices. I will do my best to find out what happened on the 20th by week’s end Kathleen.

  3. Sylvia says:

Here it is Kathleen. Jordan’s next court date is 08 February 2011 – 08:30 am, Courtroom #5, Ottawa courthouse.

Courtroom #5 is usually for remands.

  4. Robert Kagane says:

Please keep me posted on the progress of this case. I have known Fr. Jim as a respectable person. I just don’t believe those allegations. Even if he was found with it, I know it is possible for someone to access another’s computer remotely and download stuff there. I suspect malice in this case. Please let me know what happens because I am not in Canada.

  5. Sylvia says:

I just updated courtdates Robert. The next courtdate for Father Jordan is preliminary hearing on 11 May 2011.

  6. 1 abandoned sheep says:

It would be interesting to know if Fr. McCann attended court today to give comfort to his good friend Fr. james Jordan.
Pretty soon we will need a separate court just to deal with the number of omi. Priests who have been charged with some crime.
A few years ago , while speaking with a good OMI. , he replied to my question about when will this all end, he said—-Death sometimes is the only answer to these problems.
May GOD have Mercy on HIS Church.

  7. 1 abandoned sheep says:

Hear Ye, the charges against Father James Jordan were dismissed by Judge Maisonneuve in Ottawa Court May 11th. Reason- charges laid with insuficient evidence, Crown should have known there was little chance of conviction, etc.
And, yes this is the same Judge who was replaced by RETIRED Judge Kirkland in the Bishop Lahey case.
Two years it took to discover these holes in the Crown’s case. My oh My justice is blind.

  8. Robert Kagane says:

I thank God that the truth always stands out. Our prayers have certainly been heard. Even though there are some bad priests out there, there still exists good ones, and I have several reasons to believe that Fr. Jim is one of them. Truth always sets us free, and you can never argue with the truth. Praised be Jesus Christ and Mary Immaculate

  9. Gerald Kelly says:

Thank you for announcing the conclusion to these charges. If I had to rely on the mainstream I would not know that this good man has been cleared. I have known Fr. James to be kind and compassionate. I was deeply disturbed by the charges and am very happy to learn that they are groundless as I hoped and expected.

  10. DAVID THIANI says:

While fr. jim was in Kenya he was like my dad,he brought back the hope that was dead and gone in me,i met him when i was desperate looking for someone to take to school and there he was,in joined one the best public school, in kenya.I had a reason to live until just as was about graduate.he left though he had promised to come back,i dont know what happened until now.fr.jim is a good man,i viewed him as my own dad,i miss him so much.

  11. Peter Smith says:

I ve been in Kenya for thirty years now living at Karen -end and Obilates missionary are my neighbors. I came to know Fr. Jim since he came here in Kenya. He was also accused of practicing similar behaviors here in Kenya with young boys and one of them is David Thiani.
I may ask, was the investigations done properly?

    • david thiani says:

peter that really absurd,fr. jim was a great man of God,i sear on my life that fr. did nothing to me apart from taking me to school.am in university right now pursuing a degree in finance ,i ore my achievements to him,may God have mercy on u.

    • davi thiani says:

Peter,do u know I can sue you for defamation?watch what you say!

  12. Debbie Cunningham says:

Is this the same Fr. James Jordan that was at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Calgary?

    • Sylvia says:

In the mid 80’s there was Father James Anthony Jordan omi, the Oblate priest referenced above who was ordained in 1972, and there was also a Father James Jordan who was ordained for the Archdiocese of Calgary in 1965. The latter is not listed in any of the Church directories which I have on hand after 1991, and I have no idea where he served in the Diocese of Calgary. I think it is highly possible he served at the Cathedral.

I have a fair bit of information on the assignments of Father James A Jordan omi – nothing which indicates he ever served at the cathedral.

Sorry Debbie. I can’t give a definitive answer, but it looks as though it was probably the Father James Jordan who was ordained for the Diocese of Calgary in 1965?

  13. charle anteros says:

I am terrible sorry to read about Fr. Jim Jordan’s ordeal. Fr. Jim was my parish priest at St. Peter’s Catholic Parish in New Westminster, BC. Fr. Jim was especially helpful to me in assisting me sponsor my Sister with her 5 kids from Kenya in 2004. After her arrival in 2006, Fr. Jim continued to give her support. My sister even named one of children Jordan after Fr. Jim.
We will continue to pray fro Jim and that he continues to serve God in the direction he has been effortlessly doing for vulnerable women and children.
