Convicted sex offender Father Ron Léger has been granted bail after being arrested on additional charges.

Judge Cynthia Devine ruled he could be released from custody on a $1,000 bond and a $10,000 surety provided by Clerics of Saint Viator.

Léger was arrested in October on eight new charges involving four men. He is currently serving out time for his conviction in 2015

In 2015, the former head of Holy Family Parish priest and founder of Teen Stop Jeunesse, was convicted of sexual offences against three males and was later handed a two year sentence.

The charges date back to a series of incidents that occurred between 1984 and 2004.

Judge Devine noted that in light of new charges the parole board may decide to revoke Léger’s day parole.

Shortly after pleading guilty to the earlier charges last year, Léger was stripped of his rights to represent the ministry by the Archdiocese of St. Boniface.

Léger now returns to the halfway house set out by the parole board. He is not allowed to have contact with the men who have pressed charges against him.

The judge ordered Léger to stay 200 metres away from them, including their homes, work and places of worship.

Léger is barred from contacting anyone 18 or under. His lawyer Saul Simmonds declined comment.

A trial date has not yet been set.

A former Winnipeg priest and convicted sex offender facing new charges involving four alleged victims has been granted bail.

Ron Leger, 78, won his release Tuesday following an appearance before Judge Cynthia Devine.

Devine released Leger on a $10,000 surety and $1,000 recognizance and ordered that he have no contact with his alleged victims or children under 18.

Specific details of the bail hearing cannot be disclosed under terms of a publication ban.

Leger was arrested last month and charged with eight counts of sexual assault involving four male victims who were between 10 and 12 years old when the assaults began in 1981.

Leger was sentenced to two years in prison in February after pleading guilty in July 2015 to sexually abusing three boys between 1980 and 2004. He was granted day parole in September.

Leger and the Archdiocese of Saint Boniface and Clercs de Saint-Viateur du Canada have been named in two separate sexual assault lawsuits.

The offences for which Leger was previously convicted involved brief fondling of the male victims`genitals. The first victim was 12 or 13 years old and visiting the drop-in centre Leger ran when Leger came up behind him and squeezed his genitals, Crown attorney Debbie Buors told court at Leger`s sentencing hearing. The boy asked Leger what he was doing and immediately left the drop-in centre.

Leger assaulted the second victim several times, beginning when he was 15. Buors said Leger rubbed the boy’s genitals over his clothes on repeated occasions and asked “how his big boy was doing.” Years later, the then 19-year-old man was visiting Leger’s home when Leger rubbed the man’s genitals over his clothes and told him he should “make babies.”

Leger groped the third then 10-year-old victim in a similar fashion in a school locker room.

Let’s hope and pray they do.

So, as of last evening he was back to the half way house, and, barring intervention by the parole board, essentially foot loose and fancy free to roam where he will during the day.

Please keep the complainants and his victims in your prayers.
