Sex attack charges stayed

The Edmonton Journal

24 July 1990

TOM BARRETT Journal Staff Writer

Edmonton

Sexual assault and indecent assault charges against a Beaverlodge Roman Catholic priest have been placed on hold, says a spokesman for the Attorney General’s Department.

Rev. Gerald Keindel was scheduled to begin a preliminary inquiry today in the small community about 500 kms north of Edmonton.

But Lesley Gronow told The Journal the two charges were stayed earlier this month. The Crown has a year to resinstate the charges or they are officially withdrawn.

In practice, stayed charges are rarely relaid.

“We’re all very happy to hear the charges have been stayed,” said Rev. Albert Sturzer of Grande Prairie.

Sturzer was unsure of Keindel’s current status with the church, but said the 55-year-old man would definitely not be returning to Beaverlodge because a new priest has already been named to replace him.

Keindel was alleged to have committed the offences against a Beaverlodge woman between 40 and 50 years old.

The events were alleged to have occurred between December 1981 and January 1985.

Keindel was temporarily suspended when the charges were laid, March 24.

BEAVERLODGE, Alta. (CP) – A Roman Catholic priest, described as “good and devoted,” has been charged with sexual assault and indecent assault on a woman.

Parishioners cried or sat in silence in this northwestern Alberta community of 1,800 Sunday after being told their priest for nine years had been charged.

Rev. Gerald Keindel, 55, is the fifth Alberta priest in the last year to be accused of sex-related offences.

He was charged with one count each of sexual assault and indecent assault and is to appear in Provincial Court in Beaverlodge, 500 kilometres (300 miles) northwest of Edmonton, April 10.

RCMP Constable Peter Leblanc said the charges were laid after a complaint by a Beaverlodge woman, described as being between 40 and 50 years old.

Rev. Albert Sturzer of Grande Prairie told the congregation at St. Mary’s Catholic Church about the charges at Sunday morning’s Mass. Keindel has been temporarily relieved of his duties, Sturzer said.

A priest at Archbishop Henri Legare’s residence in McLennan, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Keindel “was a good and devoted priest.”

The charges are based on events alleged to have taken place in the town between December, 1981, and January, 1985, police said.

Catholic priest charged in sexual assault of woman

Beaverlodge

A Roman Catholic priest, described as “really good and devoted,” has been charged with sexual assault and indecent assault involving a woman from this northern Alberta community.

Parishioners cried or sat in stunned silence at their Beaverlodge church Sunday on learning their priest of nine years had been charged.

Father Gerald Keindel has become the fifth Alberta priest in the last year to be charged with sex-related offences.

The 55-year-old Keindel was charged Saturday by RCMP with one count each of sexual assault and indecent assault. He will make his first appearance April 10 in provincial court in this town, 500 km northwest of Edmonton.

Janet Cook was one about 120 parishioners in the pews at the town’s St. Mary’s Catholic Church who heard Father Albert Sturzer of Grande Prairie deliver the shocking news at Sunday morning’s mass.

“I was busy reading a church bulletin, when all of a sudden he started talking about some sex-related scandal,” Cook said in a telephone interview.

“It was an unbelievable shock and some people, particularly the older parishioners, were in tears.”

In addition to Catholics in the town of 1,800, Keindel also served the local communities of Goodfare, Horse Lake, and Hythe.

Sturzer told the congregation he would be filling in as parish priest because Keindel had been temporarily relieved of his duties.

Archbishop Henri Legare was not available for comment, but a priest at Legare’s residence in McLennan said he believes the archbishop only became aware of the allegations against Keindel late Saturday.

The priest, who spoke on condition he not be identified, said he believed Keindel had travelled to Edmonton after the charges were laid.

“He was a really good and devoted priest,” the priest said.

“This is as much a shock to us as it is to the parishioners.”

RCMP Const. Peter Leblanc said he began the investigation that resulted in Saturday’s charges several months ago, after a complaint by a Beaverlodge woman, whom he described as being between 40 and 50 years old.

Leblanc said the charges are based on events alleged to have occurred in the town between December 1981 and January 1985.

The charges were sworn before a justice of the peace Saturday, but he said Keindel will be served with a court summons at a later date.

Does anyone have anymore info on this guy? Any other victims of his out there?

  2. Sylvia says:

just another victim: Have you gone to the police?

  3. just another victim says:

No I am still early in the stages of healing.

    • Sylvia says:

That’s fine. I wasn’t trying to push. I thought that if perhaps you had gone to police there might be a newpaper report that I could track down.

We do know that in July 1990 he was charged with sexual and indecent assault in Beaverlodge, Alberta. I don’t know the outcome, but that means at least one other person has reported this man.

Does anyone out there have any info on Redemptoris priest Tex Keindel? I get the sense from his bio that if he was convicted he served little or no time. Did the case even go to trial? Does anyone know?

I will see what I can do to track down more info this week. Meanwhile I would appreciate any tid bits anyone out there may have to offer. Either post them here, or email me at cornwall@theinquiry.ca

  4. just another victim says:

The comments taken from the above articles: “We’re all very happy to hear the charges have been stayed,” said Rev. Albert Sturzer of Grande Prairie. and “was a good and devoted priest.” Doesn’t that just sum up what the church says when thing get dropped and what they say about all offenders?

What about the victim, no mention of how she was effected, what the church did for her, no all about Tex Keindel. Same old same old.

  5. Peter LeBlanc says:

In reference to Tex, the female victim has since passed away many years ago. I hve also retired from the RCMP several years ago. Troubling case indeed !

  6. Sylvia says:

Cay you tell us why the charges were stayed Peter?

  7. just another victim says:

Gerald Keindel has gone to meet final judgement. Perhaps justice will be done where he is now when it could never be done while he was alive.

Thank you jav. I have posted the obituary:

August 2017: Reverend Gerald Keindel CSsR obituary

I know two of his victims. For their own reasons neither went to police or filed lawsuits. My heart goes out to both those women who , as young girls, suffered at the hands of Father Keindel.

As many of you know, the death their molester is generally a difficult time for all victims. Please keep all those who suffered at the hands of Father Keindel in your prayers.
