The bottom of the barrell

On 19 April 2017 I blogged  “Beyond dirty“, that in response to the startling  news that the sex assault charges against Father Javier De Los Angeles Cortazar (Father Cortazar) had been stayed.  A question was put to the complainant  by defence which would force the complainant  to either violate the Seal of Confession and be excommunicated, or remain faithful to his priestly vows, be cited for contempt of court and land in jail.

Dirty.  Really really dirty.

This from a priest.

That any priest would stoop so low in his own defence is beyond me.  That is the bottom of the barrel.

But, it worked, did it not?  Bottom of the barrel or no, it worked.  Father Cortazar “walked.”

The end really and truly justified the means.

There must be some canonical penalty for something like this?  There must be.     This is unconscionable.

And, same priest but on a slightly different note…

You may recall  that, for reasons unknown, Father Cortazar was permitted to remain in active ministry after the sex assault charges were laid.  In other words, for reasons unknown, a priest who allegedly sexually assaulted a fellow priest and was facing criminal charges related to those allegations was allowed to continue to offer up the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, hear confessions and provide spiritual guidance.

Well, I had hoped that in light of the stay there would automatically be a canonical investigation to determine if indeed Father Cortazar sexually assaulted a fellow priest, and pending the outcome of that investigation –   for the safety and spiritual well-being of all –  Father Cortazar would be suspended.

Not.  Well, at least not right now….

Father Cortazar is scheduled to say Mass at Sacred Heart in Look Lake this weekend.

What can I say?

This whole thing smells to high Heaven.

Please keep the complainant in your prayers.
