Cross-examination continues

I realized last night that there is a publication ban at the Father Stephen Amesse trial, and i am not sure of the extent of the ban.  It is usual at sex abuse trials to have a ban on the names of complainants, however the judge made reference yesterday to the ban at the preliminary hearings.  Bans at preliminary hearings generally  cover not only the identity of complainants, but also all testimony and evidence.  I doubt that that is the case here at trial, but, i just don’t know.  So, better to be safe than sorry. I wiil find out today what exactly the ban covers.  Meanwhile I dare not post anything regarding testimony of yesterday .

I can however tell you that there was a strong showing of support for Father Amesse, so much so that about ten minutes before the trial was scheduled to begin we were all directed to a larger courtroom.

There were probably about 25 people there supporting Father Amesse.  Those who have attended such trials know that that is a large number.

I can tell you also that Father Amesse seemed very at ease prior to the start of the trial and during breaks – he chatted and laughed and joked with supporters, turned at times to wave or give a thumbs up.

The trial continues today at 10 am.  At recess yesterday the complainant was being cross-examined by defence lawyer Bob Carew.  Cross-examination will continue this morning.

Please keep the complainant in your prayers.

Enough for now,

Sylvia
