Oh my.

I don’t know if I can quite articulate my thoughts here

Look at this:

26 February 2017:  “Pope Francis reversed decisions to kick paedophiles out of the priesthood” & related articles

Scroll down to the last article where the Holy Father talks about hypocrisy.  Here is an excerpt:

The comments delivered in a sermon broadcast on Vatican Radio, in which the pope said that hypocritical Catholics should admit “‘my life is not Christian, I don’t pay my employees proper salaries, I exploit people, I do dirty business, I launder money, (I lead) a double life’.”

“There are many Catholics who are like this and they cause scandal. How many times have we all heard people say ‘if that person is a Catholic, it is better to be an atheist’.”

What struck me here is the glaring omission. Can there really and truly be a Catholic on the face of the earth who is a greater hypocrite than a priest who molests and preys on the vulnerable?  I often say it is – or perhaps better to say should be? – an oxymoron to say “Father” and molester in the same breath.  One is/(should be?) the antithesis of the other.

But, in his small dissertation on hypocrites, no mention from the Pope of clerical predators?  I checked.  I read through a slew of articles covering these comments.  I thought that perhaps some media had failed to report what others had covered.  No.  Nothing.  Not a boo from the Holy Father about clerical sexual predators being the ultimate Catholic hypocrites.

Oversight?  Perhaps, but a strange one.  It’s like missing the elephant in the room.

As for hypocrites causing scandal.  Are there any Catholics who have brought greater scandal upon the Church than clerical sexual predators?

I think not.

Now back up and read  the preceding articles, those  regarding the Pope’s decision to reduce sentences on several priests who were to be defrocked.  The Pope decided that in these instances a life of prayer and penance was more befitting the predators than defrocking/laicizing/reducing to the lay stating.

Why in the name of all that’s good and holy would he allow these molesters to remain in the priesthood?

Why did he over-rule the recommendations to defrock?

The fact that they are permitted to  remain in the priesthood is an affront to their victims, to all Roman Catholics, and to God Himself.  These men contaminate the priesthood by their presence.

It’s false charity.  There is nothing truly charitable about allowing men who have so selfishly, cruelly, cunningly and viciously pillaged and plundered the flock to remain in the priesthood.

Note too the rationalization for this so-called act of mercy :

Vatican spokesman Greg Burke said the restrictions are intended to ensure the priest’s conduct within the church is supervised and their access to children is prevented.

What can I say?   In light of the manner in which known and convicted molesters have been supervised by their own over the past years, what can I say?

Confusion abounds.

Disturbing.

I’m thinking I’m going to start posting ‘nice’ things from time to time- pictures, stories, videos.  Just for a little change every now a then.  A reminder that there is indeed beauty in this world :).  I’m thinking it through 🙂

Enough for now,

Sylvia
