Guam concern over priest transfer to Canada
Concerns have been raised on Guam about the Catholic Church’s decision to send a priest accused of misconduct to study canon law in Canada.
The Pacific Daily News reported a group called Concerned Catholics of Guam said Father Adrian Cristobal lied to shelter Anthony Apuron, an archbishop accused of sex abuse.
Archbishop Apuron faces a Vatican trial and a number of lawsuits on Guam over numerous historical allegations of child sex abuse.
The group accused the island’s Catholic Church of sending Father Cristobal to Canada with full knowledge of his actions, which appeared to condone his misdeeds.
A spokesperson said sending the priest to study in Canada, and not the mainland United States, was suspect.
The church was yet to respond to the newspaper.
Father Adrian Cristobal was Chancellor for the Archdiocese of Agana, Guam during the tenure of Archbishop Apuron. Some may recall that last year, after the Archbishop faced allegations of sexual abuse of young boys dating to the 1970s, Apuron was sent off on leave and the Vatican sent in Archbishop Savio Hon Tai Faia as a temporary administrator. I believe that was in June 2016? Anyway, in fairly short order a new Chancellor was appointed. Father Cristabel continued to serve as a parish priest. Archbishop Apuron remains Archbishop of Agana, but without pastoral responsibilities and administrative authority.
When I first came across the above I spent some time trying to find further information. Initially, no luck. Then I tried again. Here’s what I found:

I am unable to find much in relation to what role Father Cristobal might have played in relation to the sex allegations against Apuron, but it seems from all of the above that members of the group, Concerned Catholics of Guam, believe that Father Cristobal covered up for Archbishop Apuron. Did he or did he not? I just do not know. I have tried to find articles with specifics but have been unable to do so. No matter, it seems that Father Cristobal, the former Chancellor of the scandal plagued Archdiocese of Agana, is here in Canada! in fact, he is here in Ottawa, Ontario ….. now studying Canon Law at Saint Paul’s University! And, if what we read in that latter article is fact, he’s here, “to research canon law to contest his new assignment.”
Things just keep getting crazier and crazier.
