Another ‘pay-off’ and cover-up exposed:

14 November 2016:  Archdiocese of Ottawa paid former altar boy $50,000 after sex abuse allegations

Note that in 1997 Ottawa’s Archbishop Marcel Gervais was contacted by a former altar boy alleging sex abuse by Father Jacques Faucher

In December 1998, following an “internal investigation” by the archdiocese the former altar boy was given a $50,000 cheque.  In 1999 Faucher was presumably removed from ministry and assigned to  “ecumenical and interreligious affairs ” – allegedly to keep him away from children.  There is no indication that the priest’s faculties to say Mass and hear confessions were suspended.

Twelve years later (2011) Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, “removed Faucher’s privileges to represent himself as a priest.”  Archbishop Prendergast, who was installed as archbishop of Ottawa in 2007,   had apparently, for an unstated period of time, been reviewing files of those diocesan clergy alleged to have committed sexual misconduct.   I gather this to mean that at that time, 12 years after the Ottawa Archdiocese conducted an “internal investigation” and  cut a $50,000 cheque to pay-off the victim,  Faucher was stripped of his priestly faculties? and that from that time – and from that time only? –  could no longer say Mass or hear confessions?  According to the article, Archbishop Prendergast notified the Gatineau Archdiocese of that decision.

That’s 12 years!  If fact, that’s twelve long years that the Ottawa Archdiocese allowed this priest to bounce around between Ottawa and Quebec with unfettered access to vulnerable children.  The fact that Faucher he didn’t ‘have’ a parish for those years means nothing.  The stark reality is that former parishioners and all other Catholics and non-Catholics with whom he had contact over the years had not been told and therefore had not the slightest idea that, after quietly conducting an internal investigation into sex abuse allegations,  the archdiocese had equally quietly paid an “alleged” victim of this priest $50, 000.  And the stark reality is that, to my knowledge, Catholics and non-Catholics involved with ecumenical and interreligious affairs do have children.  Ditto people who live on the same street as Faucher.

The bottom line, and yet another stark reality,  is that children are not restricted to those churches where a known or suspect priest serves.  That’s just plain common sense.  How anyone can infer that children are presumably safe because a known or suspect clerical molester is not assigned to serve as a pastor or assistant at a church is beyond me.

A final and important stark reality:   no attempt was made to reach out to other victims, or their families.  It was all hush hush.  Top secret.  Ssshhhhhhh!

Thank goodness that in 2012 the “alleged” victim who received the $50,000 cheque heard that Father Fuacher was participating in some manner at a Mass or Masses in Aylmer Quebec.  He was upset.  He thought that Faucher was going to be defrocked.

As an aside, I wonder which church in Aylmer?  Does anyone know?  There are both English and French churches in Aylmer.  I would think it was French, but I believe it was around that time that St. Mark’s in Aylmer was going through a bit of an upheaval with its long-time Pastor Father William Marravee retiring, and the dioceses’ June 2012 plan to replace him with Father Loner Rooney in August 2012 hitting a glitch.    I think it’s possible – but perhaps not probable? – that he was helping out at St. Mark’s?

Anyway, back to the “alleged” victim.  He contacted police. Charges were laid ( “Ottawa police have charged a 76-year-old retired priest with the alleged sex abuse of a 7-year-old boy in the early 1970s.”   In fairly short order, there were five complainants and 28 charges.

In March 2016 Faucher was convicted of molesting three of the five boys.  The judge acquitted Faucher on the charges of two of the complainants, one of whom, was, believe it or not, the very one who was given that  $50,000 cheque from the Ottawa archdiocese, and the one who first reported  Faucher to police.  Judge Pierre Roger apparently did not  discount their stories, but said there was a reasonable doubt.

I shake my head in disbelief.  A copy of the cheque was filed as an exhibit at trial.  Are we to believe that the archdiocese hands out cheques willy-nilly to anyone landing on the diocesan or palace doorstep alleging sexual abuse?

No matter.  Thanks to the courage of that “alleged”  victim Father Faucher has been identified for what he is, a child molester:  truly a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

And now this.  Proof of cover-up.

Sickening, isn’t it?  Just sickening.

Please keep all those who went to police alleging sexual abuse by Father Faucher in your prayers.

The appeal by ex-priest, convicted serial molester and former long-term fugitive from justice Eric Dejeager  is still alive and dragging through the courts.  Dejaeger, now a resident of Warkworth Institution, a medium security near Campbellford Ontario,  is still an Oblate but NOT a priest, is appealing a decision to deny him legal aid. (He wanted legal aid to appeal several of his convictions)

The next court date for Eric Dejaeger is:

15 March 2017:   1:30 pm, “to be spoken to” brought forward to the court of appeal panel, Iqaluit courthouse, Iqaluit, Nunavut

Please keep the many many Dejaeger victims in your prayers.

I am awaiting a call back with the next court date for former Ottawa school teacher Jessica Beraldin.   As soon as I have the information I will post it and let you know.
