Excellent report just out in the Ottawa Citizen on sex abuse scandals in the  Ottawa Archdiocese.

I’m just going to have a late supper now, but did want to get these posted first.  A long but worthwhile read.

17 May 2016:  Special report: Insurance lawsuit reveals secrets of Ottawa’s clergy abuse scandal

17 May 2016:  Special Report: ‘I’ve been given peace:’ Rev. Barry McGrory

17 May 2016:  Editorial: Diocese silence on sexual abuse must end

17 May 2017:  “Priest admits to sexual abuse for first time in Citizen interview” here.

Enough for now,

Sylvia

Sylvia, has this good inquiry by the Citizen touched on any of the Priests in the Diocese of Gatineau, which used to come under the Archdiocese of Ottawa? I am sure the numbers would be a lot higher if it did.
It is great this amount of info is now public so the people of the Archdiocese of Ottawa can see just how bad it was, and may still be.
I hope they get all the abuser priests in Ottawa and Gatineau !!

I did a quick look and see a few names from across the river which are not on the list, so, no, the names do not include those from Gatineau-Hull.

It would probably get a bit complicated if there was an attempt to include those, because the Diocese of Hull was erected in 1963, and then it became the Diocese of Gatineau-Hull in 1982, and the Archdiocese of Gatineau-Hull in 1990. I’m not really sure, but I think legally abuse would have to pre-date 1963 to be considered Archdiocese of Ottawa?

I don’t think there are any who pre-date 1963, … who are on the Accused list.

Once again, thanks for your great work in keeping us informed, Sylvia. It’s interesting to me though that as thorough as this exposé appears to be, it misses Fr. McCann who you and I both know served in the diocese for many years after his conviction in B.C. Your website details the stories best. No diocese is willing to reveal ALL of the cases in their diocese, which does little to build trust.

    • Sylvia says:

I think Leona that he restricted to priests who are or were incardinated in the Archdiocese of Ottawa and what the archdiocese has paid out in settlements to victims if those priests. Yes, McCann is not mentioned, and there are several others I could think of who are not mentioned, but as I thought it through realized that it is probably because they were were recyled here from elsewhere, or belong to an order of prests. That’s my guess. Perhaps if there was public record that any of that group have molested here they would be included?

Sylvia, I think the Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa will only move to rid themselves of a sex abusing Priest when the heat gets too hot! The latest story about McGrory et al proves that.
The Archbishop is not a good shepherd, trying to lead from the rear. A good shepherd is out in front, and the sheep follow him- not the reverse.

The same goes for Pembroke. They appear to be shrouded in a cloak of secrecy. It is sad that Bishop Mulhall has pledged his “on-going support” to the victims of his wayward priests (not all of them) but I haven’t heard of any victims getting a call from Mulhall pledging support and encouragement. Hot air and a big wind!!!
I wonder how many skeletons are hidden in the closets of the palace? Mike.

    • 1 abandoned sheep says:

Mike, there are several hidden- especially from the Robert Bourne era. I used to live in that Diocese, and have a lot of memories, mostly good, but, I knew Bourne and never trusted him. Just TOO friendly, even on the most unimportant matters.

  5. Leona says:

    Mike,

Do you think there is any diocese in Canada that is truly trustworthy?

    • PJ says:

Leona, I don’t believe there is. After finding out all that I have on the Sault diocese and the lengths they went to cover and transfer sulivan, none of them can be trusted.

  6. Mike Fitzgerald says:

Leona – strange as it may seem in my limited travels, I have always had admiration for the “Madonna House” community in Combermere Ont. I have had the privilege of knowing a great many priests and residents of the community, and it is my opinion that they set the “water mark” when it comes to living good and humble lives. Money, power, and fame here mean nothing, and they certainly do not live in “palaces”!
If there are skeletons in their closets, they would be few in number. Were I a gambling man, I would put my money on Madonna House for coming in “first” when it comes to leading the faithful by example. Mike.
