As you see, James Roche is no longer a priest. I had great difficulty finding information on his years in the priesthood – as yet I don’t even have his date of ordination. Where he did, as you will also see, receive a lot of coverage was in his role as social activist with the Innu in Labrador, particularly in the Goose Bay area.
James Roche has been added to the list because I happened on the following court document ST v Oblates of Mary Immaculate, St Peter’s Province et al
The following two paras caught my eye:
B.P. alleges that Leonard Paradis, while a priest in Sheshatshiu, from about 1979 to 1984, sexually assaulted B.P. by acts of fondling and attempted masturbation, commencing when B.P. was approximately nine years old, during religious and social activities on the Mission premises of the fourth defendant and while accompanying B.P. on hunting and sporting trips into the country.
B.P. also alleges that James Roche, while a priest at Sheshatshiu during 1986 and 1987, sexually assaulted him by acts of fondling and kissing and acts of fellatio, during church-sponsored religious and social activities on the Mission premises of the fourth defendant and while accompanying B.P. on hunting and sporting trips into the country.
I don’t know the outcome of this suit as it relates to Roche, and have no idea where he is now, or what he is doing, or for that matter if he is even alive. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I will see if I can get more inf with a few phone calls.
Note the reference to another Oblate priest, Father Leonard Paradis. Back in 1989 Father Paradis entered a guilty plea and was given a paltry three years probation. He was eventually recycled to Ottawa and by the mid 90’s was assisting at Masses at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church.
And, oh yes, …..note that in the 1985-86 church directory index Father Paradis is shown at Our Lady of Snows Roman Catholic Church in Sheshatshits, Labrador, and, yes, the Pastor at Our Lady of Snows was none other than Father James Roche. (Sheshatshits is a small Innu community about 18 miles North of Goose Bay, Labrador)
I see too on the Father Paradis page that a CBC news article from 06 April 2006 references settlement of a lawsuit. I think that may be the same suit, but there is no mention there of James Roche. I will see if I can find out is this settled, or what became of it.
And another strange twist tucked in that CBC article. . There is reference to Gordon Paul Baynham, an Oblate brother who was charged, but, believe it or not, the provincial government refused to pay the costs for his extradition from the States! Baynham is also mentioned in ST v Oblates of Mary Immaculate, St Peter’s Province et al
Anyway, I will be adding the name of Gordon Paul Baynham to the list. I will try to work on that over the next few days and see if he ever did have to face his accusers, and even if I can sort out if he is still an Oblate brother.
Speaking of the next few days, I will be having and enjoying the company of several of my “wee” ones for the next few days. Truth be told, some are not so “wee” any more, but my husband and I always refer to them, our grandchildren, as our “wee ones.” They are down at the beach right now , and I am doing what I can on the site before their return 🙂
Enjoy the weekend everyone. I will be keeping tabs on things and will do what I can on the site come bedtime or when they’re busy playing.
Enough for now,
