Just back from Kingston, Ontario – manged to get down to sit in on most of day one of Father Rene Labelle’s preliminary hearing. There is a publication ban on testimony and evidence, and a publication ban on the identity of the complainant – I will however be able to make a few comments about the day – will do so later. Right now I’m getting a cup of nice hot coffee and then on to putting together a bite to eat 🙂
Father Labelle has, by the way elected trial by judge in the Ontario Supreme Court. Interesting is it not that he, like so many others in Canada, prefers to go for trial by judge alone vs trial by jury?
Anyway, that’s the one piece of news I can relay and can do so quickly. The preliminary hearing is still under way – the Crown is trying to prove that there is sufficient evidence to go to trial, defense is trying to show there is not. It will be in the judge’s hands. If the judge concurs with the Crown Father Labelle will be ordered to stand trial, and per his election, in the Supreme Court with trial by judge alone.
Enough for now.
