I had hoped to post my comments re the Ted Schmidt CBC interview but don’t have it together yet, at least not to a point that I am comfortable posting.  I won’t have opportunity to work on it tomorrow until after I tuck our little grand-daughter into bed for the night – hoping I still have some oomph left in me by then 🙂  I am sure I will – she’s a  sweetheart and really is a good little girl. We are enjoying her beyond measure – love the things she says.  So funny, and she so serious in saying them .

Honest to goodness, I can’t believe I am even working on this particular blog in the first place!  And it’s totally my own doing.  After all my chatter about steering clear of these issues here I am picking my way through this interview, not because it’s that interview per se, but because it was tossed into mix when, as far I am concerned, there was much better could be done as far as addressing the Bastarche/Archbishop Richard “conciliation” process /potential cover-up in Moncton, and the cover-up in the Diocese of Bathurst.

Yes, I am using and mean to use the word cover-up.  As far as I am concerned, it is a cover-up.  What else do you call it when the names of who knows how many known clerical sexual predators dead and alive are secreted?

And what else do you call it when any and all damning information about recycling of known molesters is swept under the rug?  Ditto any and all information regarding refusal of bishops and/or other diocesan staff to act on allegations. Ditto any and all names of bishops/staff who recycled known predators.  Ditto the names of any and all priests who molested again after being recyled.  And ditto the names of any and all clergy and/or bishops who treated victims with contempt or disdain.

It was all swept under the rug.  It’s a cover-up.

And there’s another in the offing.  And CBC came up with this interview.

Anyway, I will see what I can do tomorrow evening to wrap it up and get it posted.

*****

I have another name to add to the Accused list:  Oblate priest Father Georges Chevrier (deceased).  I will get a page together early next week.  I talked to a Chevrier victim yesterday.

*****

For those who may have missed the comment I posted: Father Rene Labelle’s Preliminary Hearing has been scheduled for 20 February 2013.  Yes, that’s February 2013.

As I said when I posted it, that a long long wait for those who found the courage to come forward.  And that’s just the Preliminary Hearing.  If it goes to trial it will probably be several more months downstream after the prelim.  And, I repeat, keep them in or prayers.

JH posted that he/she is also parrying for Father Labelle.  That’s good.  I don’t ask for prayers for the accused priests specifically because there is generally no lack of prayers for an accused priest, but a dearth of them for the complainants.

Enough for now,

Sylvia

*Sylvia, if it’s any consolation, it’s not just the catholic church that seems to be going all out to bury things in the past.
There are some Canadian Institutions that have the power and the will to keep their mistakes buried in the past.

I wish I knew what it was that allows the people in charge of these institutions to sleep at night.

The right and proper thing would be to own up and admit what was done. But no, these institutions would rather cast aside the well being of the victims and instead protect their own image. And if that means they have to protect the perpetrators, then so be it, they will go all out and shield and protect the perpetrators.

You’re right on that Bobbie Bees!

This is definitely hitting the nail on the head! The RC Church is an institution that protects its own image with damage control and using parishoners’ money to do so. It’s also a secret society that knows of much more abuse and crimes….hidden away in vaults and filing cabinets. Its Bishops know the abuse scandal is much greater that what the public knows. If the vaults were open, I think Catholics all over the world would be ashamed to know what the Church has hidden.

I truly  hope the present Msgr Lynn trial in Pennsylvania  TODAY sets the tone and future for Bishops everywhere who know the depth of this sexual abuse problem and crime.

Coverups, refusing to act on allegations, recycling priests……

It gets even deeper than that. But refusing to own up to an internal disaster within the Church,  would and will be its downfall.

Own up, help the victims, repent, change, renew, re-establish, reorganize, redeem……

And as I have said in the past, inviting women and married men and women into the priesthood, would be a good start.

Keep up the good work on this site, Sylvia.

    *The Roman
Catholic Church’s hierarchy, clergy and their loyal supporters, a basket full
    of corruption.

    Their
actions, inactions of candy coated lies, scare tactics, distortions, propaganda
are the ones, these males that’s “unnatural,” “detrimental,” and do have this odor of “intrinsically disorder”, that emits the ultimate destruction of
the spirit of many, many clergy abuse victims and their supporters.

    These
clergy enablers do they ever get the message of the dirty, evil, injustice
going on, or are they so pre-occupied with their own
    inflated ego image to notice?

Do they even think or care about the victims’ of
    these disturbing and obscene clergy?

When I hear the words…“the Roman Catholic Church”, the
first thoughts comes to mind is masters of ‘betrayals of trust’.

I also want to thank Sylvia for this site!

Ditto, all. This site is so important for bringing forward the facts of these cases, which would otherwise be buried. It is a big step in the right direction. Perhaps one day the church will be so open!

I still agree with MikeMc and some others here: “inviting women and married
men and women into the priesthood, would be a good start.” Perhaps this is impossible, true. But that does not mean it shouldn’t be vocalized. The retiring catholic journalist in a recent post on CBC and on this site….also believes this is a way forward. It is no secret agenda item – just all part of the picture.

Empowerment and respect for all, women, men, and children – it all fits. The church always responds from their underlying philosophy – in the abuse cases I see them responding from: same old antiquated rules, fear,
secrecy, shame, silence. A serious lack of respect for person-hood (women, children, parents, all without church power) is common across every case. Desire for greater respect – is not a separate issue.

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion! I believe that dissent is healthy and good. I think the priests challenging the church in Ireland is good. We – women, men, children, priests, all –  all form our church. This site challenges the church’s official response, it too is good.

Why is this impossible? Because Sylvia has said so? Because of some doctrine? Some old monastic monk who wrote it?

Sensible things are always possible if open minds agree.

The RC Church does not have an open mind in a lot of cases. There’s the problem. Jesus had an honest open mind.

    Listen!

I like this: “Sensible things are always possible if open minds agree.”

    yes.

There once was sanctioned slavery in North America. They banned women and non-whites and Christians from certain places. Now we just shake our heads in disgust that anyone went along with it. I do not want to be one of those. There were always rational reasons for keeping things status quo. Inclusion – it’s an ideal.

    Listen is a good word.

    Thanks.
