(1) Father Leo Campbell csb

Someone directed me to an interesting link – this parish bulletin from Holy Rosary Church in Toronto, Ontario:

03 February 2008:  Holy Rosary Parish Bulletin

Here is the relevant text:

HOLY ROSARY PARISH

TORONTO, ONTARIO

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners at Holy Rosary: I wish to bring you the news that I received from Fr. Decker concerning Fr. Leo’s health and to update you with the news of the Pastoral Associate:

Fr. Kenneth Decker, the Superior General of the Basilian Fathers, has asked Fr. Leo Campbell to take a temporary medical leave from Holy Rosary Parish, effective Friday, January 18, 2008. Fr. Campbell’s medical situation is appropriately confidential. No other information is available at this time. Any personal messages for Father Campbell can be addressed here to the parish and will be forwarded to him. Work-related matters should be referred to other staff members. Any questions should be addressed to Father Decker at his Toronto Office.

Clearly Father Campbell’s absence creates challenges for Fr. Chui, Parish Staff, and many parishioners. The Basilian Fathers are working with me to meet these challenges. Please be assured that Fr. Decker and all Basilian Fathers will keep Holy Rosary Parish in its prayer at this time.

Father Kenneth Decker, C.S.B.

I had been told some time that a victim contacted contacted the Basilians in 2008 to report childhood sex abuse at the hands of Father Leo Campbell, and that on the heels of that Campbell was shipped off to a treatment centre in the Newmarket area, and that shortly afterwards Father Leo Campbell was dead. It was believed, but not known with certainty, that Father Campbell died while at this centre.  There was talk of suicide.

I believe that if indeed Father Campbell was sent to a treatment facility in the Newmarket area that was probably Southdown in Aruora, Ontario.

I am speculating here, but do believe that the announcement in this bulletin would coincide with the Basilians having been contacted by a victim.  Here is the text:

Note the reference to Father Campbell’s “medical situation” which “is appropriately confidential.”  The “temporary medical leave”  commenced 18 January.  Father Campbell was dead on 14 February. According to the Basilian bio.  he died in a Basilian facility:

“Leo had been experiencing laboured breathing for a few days.  After supper he went to work on the computer.  A short time later Fr. John Malo, Rector, went to see if Leo had accessed the Internet and found that he was dead.”

(2)  Philly trial

The trial is barely off the ground and 2 jurors are gone. Let’s hope this is not a sign of things to come:

02 April 2012: 2 Jurors Removed From Philly Priest-Abuse Trial

What a disaster it would be if they went through all eight alternates in the first few weeks.  That would be the end of it.

That aside, look at the latest horrors detailed in testimony.

I am amazed to read that few are attending the trial.  In truth I don’t know why I am amazed because I know that here in Canada very few people show up for the sex abuse trial of a priest, but I did think people would be anxious to find out for themselves exactly what happened.  By the sound of it, not so!

(3)  Lawsuit

I managed to obtain a copy of the Statement of Claim.  The to priests are not identified because their names are not known at this time.  I have a couple of things to check and then will post the Statement of Claim:

Enough for now,
