I posted the latest articles re Father John McCann omi (Jack McCann). Also posted is a copy of page 2 of Ottawa’s Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s church bulletin.
Yes, my husband and I attended the 9 am ‘service’ at our Lady of Mount Carmel today. We foolishly and I suppose naively thought we were going to Mass.
No Mass!
Not even a priest!
What an absolute insult!
I will blog later. I truly believe those Catholics at Mount Carmel have been kicked in the face when they were already down and out. First they learned that the Oblate priest they have grown to know over the past four years is a convicted child molester. Then this morning’s charade – a non-explanation by a deacon, not even a priest, never mind a bishop! – and word that their Saturday morning Masses are cancelled ….effective immediately!
What’s the message? The punishment for outing a convicted clerical molester is cancellation of Saturday morning Masses?
And, no, I don’t for one moment believe that Father Liang is incapable of saying Mass on Saturday mornings.
We walked out, as did a number of others. It was just too much to take. Those people deserved better treatment than that.
I have things to do – supper included. Will recap with my thoughts later. For now, here are the articles:
08 May 2011″ Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church bulletin re ‘withdrawal’ of Father John McCann omi
07 May 2011: Ottawa priest was convicted of sex assaults
07 May 2011: No more services for priest convicted of abuse
07 May 2011: Church’s sex-crime response ‘disgusting’
07 May 2011: Priest ordered out
07 May 2011: Ottawa archdiocese removes priest convicted of sex crimes in 1990s from east-side Catholic Church
Enough for now

How many more are there ? Should not the archdiocese release a list of priests who are currently in the NCR who have been charged and convicted of various crimes ? Why must we find out that the McCanns and Laheys are amongts us only when they are caught.. make a list of current or former officials and come clean
thank you
Amen to that Brian. I agree 100%. How many more are sashaying around the Archdiocese, known as sexual predators only to their victims and Church officials?
How many in other archdioceses?
How many from the Archdiocese of Ottawa have been recycled to other dioceses, either in or out of the country? How many from other dioceses were recycled here?
How many were quietly shipped out years ago after they had been ‘caught’ but not charged, and then slipped back in a number of years later?
You’re right Brian. It’s time they came clean.
It really would not be difficult to get a list like this going and it should be done. If any allegations come forward, or, if criminal or civil preceeding are in course that questions the priest ability to minister to children, they should go directly on the list period. Prototocols should be developed to safeguard and supervise access to children by all clergy. The administration of the church has to understand that the very first priority in their ministry is to make sure their most vulnerable are safe maybe then they have a chance at rebuilding their credibility. It would take some honesty and the political will to make this foremost in their practice. |I think criminals convicted of sexually abusing children should be defrocked period and the only list that then should be kept about them is to make sure they do not come in through some other door. It’s not brain surgery develop an organization that has zero tolerance for this criminal behaviour. If they had enough foresight to see that spending money before they make priest priest might save them the embarasment of saying if we only knew and being caught in lies. For example they may want to consider having some psych evaluations of their potential priest in terms of their capacity to maintain their vows of celibacy. They should get out of the business of accumulating or safeguarding their wealth and their criminal brothers and get back into the business of spirituality, care and appropriate concern and doing what is right.
