The latest from Iqaluit.
Father Eric Dejaeger omi has retained Iqaluit lawyer Andrew Mahar. Mahar defended Pingotuk Kolola, the Nunavut man convicted of first-degree murder last year in the 2007 shooting of off-duty RCMP Const. Douglas Scott.
There was a bail hearing yesterday. I was unable to reach anyone to firm up exactly what transpired yesterday, however, in talking to other sources in the area I was told that an application for bail was either denied or the hearing was adjourned and rescheduled to 09 February 2011. Since Dejaeger has just retained a lawyer, and since another bail hearing is set, I think it was probably the latter – a defence request to adjourn to allow Mahar to familiarize himself with the file.
The hearing 08 February is listed as “show cause” which means it’s a bail hearing. The Crown has to “show cause” why the defendant should not be released on bail.
And, that’s the latest.
Enough for now,
Sylvia
