Happy New Year!

A Happy New Year.

I realize that the year ahead will be a difficult one for many, hence this  lovely New Year’s Prayer/poem I happened upon (author unknown): it expresses my wishes and prayer for all much better than I ever could

A New Year’s Prayer

May God make your year a happy one!

Not by shielding you from all sorrows and pain,

But by strengthening you to bear it, as it comes;

Not by making your path easy,

But by making you sturdy to travel any path;

Not by taking hardships from you,

But by taking fear from your heart;

Not by granting you unbroken sunshine,

But by keeping your face bright, even in the shadows;

Not by making your life always pleasant,

But by showing you when people need you most,

     and by making you anxious to be there to help.

God’s love, peace, hope and joy to you for the year ahead.

Sylvia

    Convicted Paedophiles are Working With Your Children in School

    Convicted paedophiles are finding it easy to get jobs in schools because teachers are failing to stop them and hushing up cases of abuse, an official report has found.

    In nearly three-quarters of school abuse cases the offender already had a criminal record for paedophilia but was allowed to work there anyway.

    Worryingly, more than half of the offenders went on to use their new positions to claim more victims than they had done before.

    The report’s authors say the figures are so high because teachers are hushing up cases by letting a sex offender resign quietly and move on somewhere else.

    In some cases they even write them glowing letters of recommendation so they can get teaching jobs elsewhere.

    Rep George Miller, Democrat, California had requested the probe and said it should leave parents ‘very concerned’.

    ‘My first reaction is just one of anger,’ he said.

    ‘I spent my entire life working with young children … and then to see that in fact with knowledge, a school official passed a convicted child abuser and molester on to another school system by covering up that information in the record. It’s outrageous.

    ‘These children were put in this unsafe position because adults in charge of their well-being failed to do their job,’ said the outgoing chair of the House education committee.

    ‘Parents have a right to believe that their children are safe in schools’.

    The study was carried out by the General Accountability Office, which examines how effectively public funds are being used.

    Its researchers looked into 15 sample cases of abuse in public and private schools between 2007 and 2009 where the offenders works as teachers, support staff, volunteers or contractors.

    Of the 15, at least 11 were convicted sex offenders who had previously targeted children.

    In six of those cases the paedophiles went on to abuse more children than first time around – the victims including a young disabled boy and a girl in the sixth grade.

    Other instances where perverts slipped through the net were an Arizona public school which hired a teacher in 2001 after failing to conduct a criminal background check.

    The teacher had been convicted of sexually abusing a minor and was subsequently convicted of having sexual contact with a young female student.

    The GAO found that the patchwork of different laws in different states led to confusion about how to police paedophiles.

    All too often there was not enough communication between states about offenders either.

    More disturbingly the GAO discovered that school officials were not performing the background checks they were supposed to and were ‘passing the trash’, hushing up cases of abuse rather than risk costly dismissals, even when the evidence was overwhelming.

    In three cases, the GAO found that school officials even provided positive recommendations or reference letters for teachers who voluntarily left but would have been subject to disciplinary action.

    Suspected abuse, the GAO found, was not always reported to law enforcement and red flags went unnoticed.

    In one instance an offender in Arizona was hired even though he answered ‘yes’ on a job application when asked if he had been convicted of a ‘dangerous crime against children’.

    Charol Shakeshaft, a Virginia Commonwealth University professor who has studied paedophiles in school, blamed lack of awareness for the appalling errors.

    She said: ‘Parents, teachers, students and administrators don’t really know how to handle it.

    ‘Districts don’t think it’s a high probability. So people just don’t learn what they’re supposed to do and what the procedures are. There is hardly any education done on this.’

    I have had people tell me that this is what has been going on here in Canadian schools.
