Former Canadian Bishop subject of sex abuse allegations

I have a page put together a page for Bishop Malcolm MacEachern, former Bishop of Charlottetown, PEI.  A lawsuit has been launched alleging sex abuse by MacEachern while he was a priest in New Waterford, Nova Scotia.  He has not been identified as the former Bishop of PEI, but, it’s him.  He’s the only Malcolm MacDonald who died in 1982 and was a priest with the Diocese of Antigonish.

Those who beleive  the Church was hijacked during the Second Vatican Council will be interested to know that MacEachern was one of the Council Fathers.  He attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council between 1962 and 1965.

MacEachern also taught Philosophy at St. Francis Xavier University (Antigonish, Nova Scotia)  from 1931 to 1950.

He retired from his episcopal duties early (1970), around age 69.  I can find nothing to indicate poor health but that could well be the case.  I must continue to search.  He died in 1982.

The man alleging sexual abuse by MacEachern is now 69!  All I can say is hats off to you whoever you are for having the courage to come forward, deal with the demons of your past, and bring this scandal to light!   Be prepared for an onslaught of slings and arrows from those who refuse to believe a bishop could ever have engaged in such depravity.  Don’t let them shake you.   Stay strong.   My prayers  and I know those of so many others are with you, as they are with all victims.

Anyone with further information on MacEachern’s years in the priesthood please contact me (cornwall@theinquiry.ca) or post a comment below.  Meanwhile there’s a few related odds and ends I must look up to verify.

Earlier in the day yesterday I added Father Raoul Deveau’s name and a link to a page  with further information on Father Deveau.

Another Nova Scotia  horror story.  This wolf in sheep’s clothing actually had one of his child victims as his housekeeper – at age 11 or 12!  He lied to his parishioners telling them the child was his niece! And all the while he was molesting the girl!

I have also posted two Statements of Claim related to Deveau:

20 September 2006:  Joanne Munroe-Sullivan Originating Notice and Statement of Claim

22 December 2009: Linda Deschamps Notice of Action and Statement of Claim

From what I read I find it hard to believe that Austin Burke, then Bishop of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia could not have known or suspected something was amuck.

Did anything happen with convicted molester and ex priest Donald Grecco yesterday?  Was yesterday’s court date on the breach charge  in Belleville cancelled?

We picked up our Christmas three yesterday- good to have it drying out in the garage.  With Christmas just around the corner I am back and forth at the computer, doing  a little work here on the site, then off to do a little decorating there in the house, then back here, then off taking care of Christmas shopping.  That’s probably the way it will be for the next few days while I work to get on top of Christmas preparations.  I have a nice collection of Dickens Village houses and pieces acquired as gifts over the years which I put up every year – last evening I dragged them all upstairs, today I will start building this year’s village with it’s snow clad hills and dales and cluster of shops around the town square.  The finished product is always called “Glendaloe.”  It’s a lot of work, but I quite enjoy picking way at it and love the finished product – it’s always a surprise :).  And, the wee ones absolutely love it!

So, I won’t be ‘manning’ the computer as I often do, but I will still be back and forth and will keep on top of things

Enough for now,

Sylvia

Interesting. Bishop Wingle of St Catherines was bishop of Yarmouth during this period.

  3. Sylvia says:

No West guy. Wingle was on the Yarmouth scene long after MacEachern was dead and gone. Wingle was Bishop of Yarmouth, NS from 1993 to 2001. MacEachern was Bishop of Charlottetown PEI 1955 to 1970.

    Sub:Bishop Malcom
This 69 years old guy may have Alzheimer’s disease or dementia
or someting? What was he doing all these 55 years???does he need some money to dig out a guy who died years and years back? may be his children or grand children asked him to do this so that they can have some money lo! rediculous.
Any way most of these cases are filed against the church after many many years, are just to get money .No dobt about it. Most of the people knw it and also believe it it. That is the reason church goers ignores it and still go to church.

Merry Christmas to you too Michael! That is totally uncalled for.
