Priests Rafael Reatiga (left) and Richard Piffano were gunned down a year ago in Bogota.

Hours after he asked his parishioners to pray for him, Rev. Rafael Reatiga was found shot to death in a car in Bogota with another Roman Catholic priest.

The Associated Press reported that police initially suspected that Reatiga and Rev. Richard Piffano, 37, were victims of robbery. But now, three weeks after their bodies were found, Colombian prosecutors say the two Catholic priests hired hitmen to kill them when at least one of them was diagnosed with AIDS.

Prosecutors located the alleged hitmen based on phone numbers the priests had called from their cell phones days before their deaths.

Prosecutors said Tuesday that the priests paid about $8,500 for the hit. They had originally planned to commit suicide by throwing themselves into a canyon but couldn’t bring themselves to jump. Medical tests showed that Reatiga, 36, had AIDS.

He also had syphilis and had been seen visiting places frequented by gay men in Bogota, according to the AP.

Two of the four assassins have been arrested, the AP reported. They face up to 40 years in prison if convicted.

Gay Colombian priests allegedly planned own murders

Bogota (dpa) – The case of two Colombian Roman Catholic priests who were murdered last year took a twist Tuesday, when it became known that investigators believe they planned their own deaths and hired hitmen to kill them.

The Bogota daily El Tiempo reported that the priests hired the killers for about 8,400 dollars.

Public prosecutor Patricia Larrota said Tuesday that the priests, who were apparently romantically involved with each other, had decided to commit suicide because one of them had been diagnosed with syphilis and HIV.

They went to Chicamocha Canyon in northeastern Colombia with the intention to jump to their deaths, but they could not do it: due to a large number of suicides at the site, officials in Santander province had put up barriers.

“Since there were retaining rails, they could not (jump), so the only option they found then was to find a person who ended their lives,” Larrota said.

The priests, Rafael Reatiga and Richard Piffano, were found dead inside a car on January 27, 2011. The authorities first suspected a robbery, since the two men had drawn a large amount of money from the bank a day earlier, when they went missing, and the cash was never found.

But the hypothesis lost credibility once the two priests, both aged 30, were found to have settled private matters and cancelled all their appointments after January 26. One of them cancelled christenings he was supposed to officiate, while the other registered all his property in his mother’s name.

Investigators tracked down calls made by the two priests in the hours before they were shot. They came to a gang of hitmen and arrested two of its members, who were formally charged with the crimes Tuesday.

The authorities caught a signal from one of the priests’ cellphones and arrested the man who was using it. He confessed to having taken part in the killings, while the other suspect denied having been involved.

Investigators have established that the two priests were regulars in nightclubs popular with the gay community.

The families of the priests reject the hypothesis of a homosexual relationship and a suicide and demand that the bodies be exhumed to prove the two were murdered in a robbery.

What can you say to this? There is a little confusion in the article – on one hand it sounds as though it just happened, and on the other it sounds as though it happened a year ago. According to the AP article (which I can’t re-publish but is linked) it was one year ago.

That aside, what to make of it all? Just when you think you’ve seen and heard it all….

I think that it is really sad. They must have been very desperate men and I pray for them.

      • 1 abandoned sheep says:

Deborah, they were 2 gay lovers who had falsified at least 3 signed statements in order to get ordained as Priests. They committed suicide by gun !

        • Deborah Kloos says:

I know that they were doing things that were awful and that they should not be priests, but I think it is sad that they killed themselves. I don’t want to see anyone kill themselves or be hurt in any way despite that they do things that are wrong. I know when you are doing bad things that you should not do then there are consequences and bad things can happen to you. I still don’t condone the death penalty or violence toward a person because they did something bad.
I work with drug addicted moms and when you see how much those babies suffer who are undergoing drug withdrawls, it just makes you so upset. At the same time, I want to take care of people without judging them and just be there for people where they are at and show them the love of Christ through me. It is just a sad situation overall and the damage is done when people are addicted to drugs, imprisoned for crimes, or infected with diseases like HIV and AIDS. I see young people with HIV and syphilis all the time too and it is a tragedy. If you play with fire then there are consequences but then you got this person who needs compassion because they are young, have a new baby and also a disease to deal with on top of things. I don’t want to see this happen to people. I just care for them and give them as much compassion as I can whether they are infected with HIV, drug addicted, prisoners who committed a crime and come into have their baby or just normal people. It does not mean that I condone their lifestyle, but if they need my help then it is what the Lord called me to do like the Beatitudes. Sometimes all we can do is pray for people because we can’t change them.

Someone sent me a link to another article which I have added above. It seems to have the details squared away a little better than the first.

    I don’t buy it.

It conveniently provides some sort of confirmation that Rodrigo Rosenberg in Guatemala
orchestrated a hit on himself. How convenient.
