BRUSSELS — Belgian media says the country’s ultraconservative Roman Catholic archbishop was hit by a pie in the face during an All Saints Day service.
Footage of the incident released Saturday showed a young man approaching Archbishop Andre Leonard on Monday and smacking him with a pie. A church official says the archbishop will not press charges against the unknown attacker.
The incident came amid growing turmoil within Belgium’s Roman Catholic church, which faces an investigation into hundreds of cases of sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests. Leonard himself shocked Catholics by sympathizing with priests accused of pedophilia and by saying that homosexuals deserved to get AIDS.
On Tuesday, Leonard’s spokesman quit his job, saying he could no longer speak for a “loose canon.”

Brussels, Nov 7 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Belgian’s Roman Catholic Archbishop Andre Leonard didn’t anticipate at all that the All Saints Day Service would be any different from the previous ones. However he was in for the surprise of his life because he was hit with a pie.
The whole act in which the attacker came close to him and hit him with a pie was also recorded. However the generous Archbishop is rather forgiving, as he isn’t going to press any charges against his attacker at all. One of the officials of the church also confirmed that the Archbishop isn’t going to press any charges.
Perhaps the attacker was frustrated with the way the Belgian Roman Catholic Church is handling the sexual abuse cases. It ought to be mentioned that in the recent times the church has been rocked with sexual abuse cases against numerous children. And the patronizing attitude of the Archbishop with the Catholic priests who are accused of sexually abusing the children shocked a lot of people. His statement that homosexuals ought to get infected with AIDS as they are going against the laws of nature also infuriated a lot of people.
