MONTREAL – A group who claims they were sexually abused by priests at a Montreal private school have posted a document online they suggest serves as proof their allegations are true.
The nine-page letter is addressed to the provincial steward of the Society of Holy Cross Brothers and is allegedly written by the lawyer who provided legal counsel to the religious organization for 24 years.
The 2006 document names a number of priests who apparently had sexual relationships with students and chronicles the failure of the religious order to halt the abuse.
In October, Montreal police asked people who may have been sexually abused at the Montreal Catholic school in the 1960s and 1970s to come forward following a slew of media reports concerning decades-old abuse cases at the private institution.
The Congregation of the Holy Cross, which founded the Montreal school in 1869, later issued a public apology to victims and promised to co-operate fully with authorities.
