(CCCB – Ottawa)… His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI today accepted the resignation of the Most Reverend Reynald Rouleau, O.M.I., as Bishop of Churchill-Hudson Bay, Manitoba, and named as his successor Father Anthony Wieslaw Krótki, O.M.I. At the time of his appointment, the Bishop-elect was Pastor of St. Stephen parish in Igloolik, Nunavut, which is part of the territory of the Diocese of Churchill-Hudson Bay. Bishop Rouleau has been responsible for the Diocese over the past 25 years, and had offered his resignation in 2010 when he reached the age of 75, as required by the Code of Canon Law.
Bishop-elect Krótki was born on June 12, 1964, in Istebna, Poland. He completed his formation in philosophy and theology at the Oblate Scholasticate in Poland, 1985-1990. He joined the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1984, made perpetual vows in 1988, and was ordained a priest on June 19, 1990. After ordination, he did parish ministry in Poznan, Poland, before coming to Canada on October 28, 1990, to assist the Oblates in Manitoba. Father Krótki first served in Winnipeg and Toronto, before going to the Diocese of Churchill-Hudson Bay. He has served as pastor in Igloolik, 1991-1993; Gjoa Haven, 1993-2001, and then again in Igloolik since 2001. Bishop-elect Krótki became a Canadian citizen on May 14, 1996, and is now a member of the Taché local community of the Lacombe province of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. He speaks English and Polish fluently, and is able to communicate in Inuktitut.
Bishop Rouleau is also a member of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. After being ordained a priest in 1963, he taught at the Oblate Seminary in Chambly, Quebec, at the Collège Saint-Vallier, Quebec City, and then at the College de Jonquière until 1968. From 1968 to 1981, he was animator and then councillor for Christian education with the Lapointe regional school board in Jonquière, Quebec. At the time of his nomination on May 15, 1987, as Bishop of Churchill-Hudson Bay, he had been Provincial Superior of what was then the Marie-Immaculée Oblate province in Quebec since 1981. As a member of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), Bishop Rouleau has served on various Commissions, including what were then the Commission for Social Affairs, 1987-1991, the Commission for Theology, 1991-1993, and the former English Sector Commission for Social Communications, 1997-2001.
The Diocese of Churchill-Hudson Bay has 17 parishes and missions, with a Catholic population of 6,115, served by two diocesan priests, seven priests and two Sisters who are members of religious communities, one permanent deacon and three lay pastoral assistants.
