RC priest facing 38 sexual abuse-related charges

A Roman Catholic priest has been charged with 38 sexual abuse-related charges from alleged incidents dating from 1969 to 1989.

George Smith appeared in provincial court in Corner Brook on the charges today.

The charges are in relation to numerous events during the time period and are the result of a 16-month RCMP investigation.

Smith turned himself into police today.

He was released from custody on conditions and is scheduled to appear in provincial court again Feb. 23 to enter a plea.

As a result of a 16-month investigation the RCMP have laid 38 charges against George Smith in relation to numerous events between 1969 and 1989.

All of the charges were sexual in nature.

Smith was suspended from his duties as a P.E.I. priest in May 2010 following an allegation of innapropriate sexual touching originating from his time in Newfoundland more than two decades ago.

The RCMP will be following up with victims to ensure they are kept advised and their privacy protected.

Smith turned himself into police in Corner Brook today.

He was released conditionally to appear to appear in court on Feb. 23rd, 2012 for a plea.

“The priority for police at this time are the victims therefore few other details will be released, said Sgt. Boyd Merrill of the RCMP.

“This investigation is sensitive and the victims are the priority”

CORNER BROOK, N.L. — As a result of a 16-month investigation the RCMP have laid 38 charges against a former Roman Catholic priest in relation to numerous events between 1969 and 1989.

All of the charges against George Smith are sexual in nature.

Smith was suspended from his duties as a priest in Prince Edward Island in May 2010 following an allegation of inappropriate sexual touching originating from his time in Newfoundland more than two decades ago.

The RCMP will be following up with his alleged victims to ensure they are kept advised and their privacy protected.

Smith turned himself into police in Corner Brook Wednesday.

He was released conditionally to appear to appear in court on Feb. 23, 2012 for a plea.
