A retired Roman Catholic priest is facing 38 charges for sexual offences. George Ansel Smith turned himself in to police today. The 16-month investigation by the RCMP revealed that the incidents happened between 1969 and 1989. Smith’s charges include gross indecency, indecent assault, sexual assault and assault. Smith has been released from custody on conditions to appear in court on February 23 to enter a plea.
Bishop Peter Joseph Hundt, who is with the Diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador, says any form of misconduct by personnel of the Catholic church is unacceptable. He says the diocese has cooperated fully with the authorities. Hundt asks members of the public with information on the case to come forward and assist the investigation. He says it would be inappropriate for diocesan officials to comment on the specifics of the case.
Police will be following up with victims.
