An 88-year-old Catholic priest and retired teacher accused of sexually abusing students in Toronto and Windsor has been charged with nine more counts of indecent assault, police said.

Father William Hodgson Marshall turned himself in to police in downtown Toronto Thursday, where he was formally charged. Three of the counts relate to incidents in Toronto and six to alleged victims in Sudbury.

Toronto police declined to say when the alleged assaults happened or where; Father Marshall was previously charged with abusing a 15-year-old boy in the fall of 1953 at St. Michael’s College School, a private, all-boys Catholic school in Toronto.

Sudbury police said Father Marshall is accused of assaulting six students between January 1960 and December 1970, when he worked at St. Charles College.

Father Marshall worked as a mathematics teacher and basketball coach at several schools in Canada and the United States, and performed missionary work on the Carribbean Island of St. Lucia. His posting in Sudbury was his longest, lasting 17 years.

He was recalled from active duty in 1996 after the religious order he belongs to, the Congregation of St. Basil, received a complaint about him. He first went to a facility in Maryland that offers programs for Catholics with psychological and spiritual problems, then retired at a Basilian-run home in downtown Toronto.

Police in Windsor laid the first criminal charge against Father Marshall last spring. They laid three more charges over the summer.

A Roman Catholic priest at the centre of a sexual abuse scandal is now facing three additional charges in Toronto.

Rev. William Hodgson Marshall was charged with three counts of indecent assault Thursday. Police wouldn’t say when the alleged incidents occurred or whether the alleged victims were students of the Basilian priest.

Last month, Marshall was charged with two counts of indecent assault stemming from an alleged incident in 1953, when the priest was teaching and coaching basketball at St. Michael’s College School in Toronto. A former student alleges Marshall asked the boy, then 15, to go into a private room, where he was then sexually assaulted.

Marshall is also facing charges of sexual assault and indecent assault in Windsor for incidents alleged to have occurred in the ’50s and ’80s.

The priest taught at schools in Toronto, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie and Windsor, where he later became principal of Holy Names high school. Marshall, 88, now lives in a home for retired priests in Toronto.
