A total of four new charges have been filed against Eric Dejaeger, a Roman Catholic priest accused of sex crimes against children in Nunavut in the late 1970s and early ’80s.
Dejaeger, 63, now faces a total of 24 criminal charges that include indecent assault and buggery, the Nunavut Court of Justice heard this week in Iqaluit.
Three of the new charges were announced in court on Tuesday. The charges are sex-related and based on allegations made by individuals in the eastern Arctic community of Igloolik.
All the charges are based on allegations that children were sexually abused while Dejaeger was working as a missionary in Igloolik between 1978 and 1982.
Dejaeger initially faced six charges when he was brought back to Nunavut earlier this year from Belgium, where he had lived for almost 16 years.
Dejaeger fled to Belgium, his country of birth, after he served a jail term in Canada for sex crimes against children in Baker Lake, another Nunavut community. He left Canada around the time the Igloolik charges were first filed in 1995.
Dejaeger has been in custody at the Baffin Correctional Centre in Iqaluit since he was returned to Canada in January.
Dejaeger is scheduled to be back in court on April 14.
I have been following this and alll I can say is I knew this man when I was young. He is the reason I chose to beocome a Roman Catholique. He is the one that baptized me in my mid teens and had me confirmed. At no time was this man anything but a perfect gentle man to me. He was and will always be my priest.

Uw vriend wordt hier vastgehouden totdat hij voor het gerecht gebracht zal worden voor ongeveer 28 aanklachten. De meeste aanklachten zijn voor sexueel misbruik van kinderen. Een klacht is voor geslachtsgemeenschap met een hond. Ik heb het vermoeden dat deze laatste klacht uw reactie ontlokt heeft. Wij stonden er ook van versteld van. Maar het is een klacht, zoals al de andere 20-plus klachten en het zal verder onderzocht worden. Verdere informatie hierover moet in een rechtszaal gebeuren, nergens anders. Een klacht is voor het ontlopen van de eerste 5 klachten van de 20 plus aanklachten. (Hij ging implaats van hier aan gehoor te geven, terug naar Belgie. Vandaar de Interpol actie die 9 jaren geduurd heeft.) Hij wordt door de bewaakers goed behandeld. Hij verblijft veel in zijn kamer. Hij heeft zijn eigen advokaat. De Canadese wetgeveing is uitermate goed. Er zou een advokaat voor hem betaald zijn (geheel voor hem betaald), en er was al een advokaat aangesteld voor hem. Ik woon in het verre noorden van Canada waar dit gebeuren zich afspeelt. Ik kom geregeld in Iqaluit, de stad waar hij momenteel vastzit. My answer was a discription of the charges (media story validation); Eric has legal representation (and had free legal representation available to him); a few public facts about his physical surroundings at this time. Then I invited more questions, should they arise and wished him a Blessed Easter.

That is my impression. He may have been told these were stories from (media) people with an anti-cleric bias and too much times on their hands. I trust I was able to clarify these are charges in a Canadian court of law. I will continue to clarify and provide published facts upon request. Pleased I provide in Flemish (Dutch). Living in the arctic, I don’t often get a chance.
