   De man ging in de jaren ’70 naar Canada om er eskimo’s te bekeren tot het christendom. Hij vergreep er zich aan acht kinderen, waarna hij in april 1990 veroordeeld werd tot vijf jaar cel. Nadat er zich begin 1995 negen nieuwe slachtoffers meldden, vluchtte hij terug naar België. In 2001 verspreidde Interpol een eerste opsporingsbericht, maar omdat Dejaeger de Belgische nationaliteit had, kwam het nooit tot een uitlevering.

   Illegaal
   Dat veranderde toen enkele maanden geleden aan het licht kwam dat Dejaeger al in 1994 de Canadese nationaliteit had verworven. Doordat de priester dat verzwegen zou hebben voor de Belgische autoriteiten, en geen aanvraag zou ingediend hebben voor de dubbele nationaliteit, verloor hij de Belgische nationaliteit. “Zijn Canadese paspoort is al in 1997 verstreken waardoor hij illegaal in ons land verblijft”, zegt Vreemdelingenzaken.

   Dejaeger kan nog beroep aantekenen bij de Raad voor de Vreemdelingenzaken tegen zijn uitwijzing. Ook kan hij vragen om vrijgelaten te worden.
