A Catholic priest convicted of abusing Inuit children has been forcibly returned to Nunavut.
Eric Dejaeger was deported from Belgium earlier this week.
He arrived in Iqaluit yesterday to face charges from his time in Igloolik in the 1970’s.
Soon upon his arrival, Dejaeger was taken to the courthouse.
In 1995, Dejaeger fled Canada after being charged with 6 counts of sexually abusing boys 30 years ago in Igloolik. He had already spent 5 years in prison for similar crimes in the Nunavut community of Baker Lake.
This week Belgian authorities deported him for overstaying his legal residency.
He is now set to stand trial in Iqaluit.
There was a delay in getting Dejaeger to the courthouse when he refused to leave his cell.  When he did arrive for his brief appearance, Dejaeger was not wearing shoes or a belt.
Dejaeger is requesting that he be kept in protective custody something the Justice of the Peace agreed with.
Dejaeger will be back in court on Monday for a bail hearing.
The crown states it will oppose Dejaeger getting bail because of his flight history
