DIOCESE SUCCESSFUL IN OBTAINING FUNDS FOR BASTARACHE PROCESS
The Hon. Mr. Justice Fred Ferguson released his judgment today allowing the Diocese of Bathurst to access portions of funds placed in trust for the education of future candidates to the priesthood. The effect of the judgment will allow the diocese to utilise these funds both for the independent alternative dispute resolution process headed by the Hon. Michel Bastarache as well as to compensate claims of those who did not participate in that process.
The diocese is confident that Mr. Bastarache can be funded within the next few days allowing him to compensate the victims. The Bastarache conciliation process is part of an approach by the diocese to deal with the legitimate claims of those alleging clergy abuse within the diocese. Compensation is only part of the process, as the diocese has also committed to provide full apologies to victims and to seek an appropriate reconciliation with those who were wronged.
