A former Bathurst priest was sentenced today in a Campbellton courtroom on charges of sexual assault.

Charles Picot’s alleged victim in this case is Derek LaPointe of Dalhousie.

Last week, the province’s highest court ordered a new trial for the former priest in a separate case.

Picot was recently acquitted on charges of indecent assault on Michael Jensen – the alleged offense is said to have happened more than 30 years ago when Jensen was just 13 years old.

Picot will be tried again following a split 2-1 decision by a three-judge panel of the New Brunswick Court of Appeal – though no date has been chosen just yet.

Charles Picot will spend 8 months behind bars and pay a 700 dollar fine for sexually assaulting at 12 year old boy in the late 70s. MAX 104.9′s Bill MacCuish was on hand for the verdict
