PERSONNEL CHANGES IN CATHOLIC DIOCESE

The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kingston, the Most Rev. Francis J. Spence, has made a number of diocesan personnel appointments, all of which came into effect on June 16.

Rev. William J. Powell, a native of Smith’s Falls, has been made the pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Cardinal, replacing Rev. Michael Reed. Fr. Powell, who has served as the associate pastor of Holy Family Parish and St. Joseph’s Parish, was ordained in 1957.

Fr. Reed will serve as the new pastor of St. Barnaby Parish in Brewer’s Mill, replacing Rev. Joseph Ainslie. Fr. Reed grew up in Belleville and obtaineed a Bachelor’s degree in Theology and Diploma in Pastoral Studies from St. Paul University and Seminary in Ottawa.

Fr. Reed will also serve as chaplain during the week at St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital.

Fr. Ainslie was ordained in 1942 and served as pastor of St. Barnaby’s Parish from 1983. He is a former pastor of St. Francis de Sales Parish and retires in this his fiftieth year of priestly service.

Rev. Paul Hamilton, who has served in the past as chaplain at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, has been appointed pastor of Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish in Belleville.

Fr. Hamilton, who was ordained in 1984 at St. Mary’s Cathedral, has graduated with a master’s degree and licence in Canon Law after two years of study in Ottawa. In 1989, he was appointed as chancellor, episcopal vicar and judicial vicar for the diocese and associate judicial vicar for the Kingston Office of the Catholic Marriage Tribunal.

He will continue as associate judicial vicar and diocesan judicial vicar.

Rev. Richard Racine, a native of Cornwall and a graduate of St. Paul’s University and Seminary in Ottawa, is the new pastor of Holy Name Parish in Kingston Mills, replacing Rev. James McGarvey.

While serving as chaplain in the Frontenac-Lennox and Addington County Roman Catholic Separate School Board, Fr. Racine will work to evolve a house of discernment for young men who might be interested in the priesthood.

Fr. McGarvey was ordained in 1952 and has served throughout the Kingston area, including pastoral assignments at St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. James’ Parish in Stirling.

In 1983, Fr. McGarvey was named pastor of Holy Name Parish, from where he now retires after forty years of priestly service.

Rev. Robin Gwyn, a native of Montreal, was ordained at St. Mary’s Cathedral in 1988 following an internship there. Afterwards he was assigned to St. Francis Xavier Parish in Brockville, where he served as associate pastor and administrator.

In 1991, Fr. Gwyn was appointed chaplain of Regiopolis-Notre Dame High School. He will continue in that position, but will also serve as pastor of St. Francois d’Assise Parish, Kingston’s francophone parish.

As well, Rev. Charles Gazeley and Rev. Joseph Lynch have been appointed associate chancellor and chancellor, respectively.

Fr. Gazeley studied at St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto and was ordained in 1958. He has served most recently as Catholic chaplain at Kingston General Hospital and Kingston Psychiatric Hospital, and has given chaplaincy service to the Sisters of Providence at Providence Motherhouse in Heathfield. He will now serve as associate chancellor.

Fr. Lynch attended Queen’s University and taught at Regiopolis- Notre Dame for 19 years before entering St. Augustine’s Seminary. He began his priestly assignments at St. Mary’s and will remain there in addition to serving as Chancellor of the diocese and episcopal vicar for chancery matters pertaining to marriage.

    I think he may be answering to the three original plus nine new charges laid against him on 05 November 2014, – if that’s the case he should be making an appearance.

Please keep victimizing these unfortunate souls betrayed by their church/faith. Please keep stereotyping and belittling victims for coming forward, after as young defenceless human beings suffering outrageous acts of sexual brutality and manipulation, still get up every day to face the rest of the forgiving, understanding and honest world that you and hopefully the rest of your family always live in. Please encourage the rest of your public to NOT report any crime, big or small, against baby or grandmother, violent or petty. This will ensure we all can turn the same blind eye and slip on the same rose coloured, extremely ignorant glasses you seem to be looking through and living by!

    On 04 June I passed on the news that Father Robyn Gwyn has committed to stand trial in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and that the files would take about a week to be transferred from the Provincial to Superior Court of Justice.

    The files are not there yet. I just checked. I will check again next week. As soon as the files are there we will be able to find out when the next court date is.

    That’s a long wait for the complainants!

    I don’t know what the motion is for. It could be any number of things, for example, it could be one side or the other contesting some evidence or the calling of a particular witness, or it could be defense trying to have the charges withdrawn.

    Father Gwyn was charged September 2014.

    Thank you, Sylvia, for sharing and supporting the truth.

    May this complainant aka Survivor, continue to have courage and stamina to appear in court and answer questions that are meant to humiliate and cast doubt.

    I wish him to know that he is believed and respected. It was not his fault.
    He is helping many others who may feel alone and ashamed and one day they may also have courage, because of his example, to come forward.

    Shame on Robyn Gwynn for not pleading guilty. He is revictimizing this Survivor by making this case go to trial, and delaying proceedings over such a long time.

    “Danny” vs. Gwynn – Danny, as difficult as it is for you, please stay strong. I know what you are going through, and I along with others only wish the best for you! I obviously don’t know your name, but I don’t need to. What you have lived through no human being should have to go through.
    I would say to you that you will come out the other end of this debacle in shining colours! You’re setting the example for a lot of us. Rise above the bull—t and show these people who you really are!

    We’re there closing arguments? I am confused that this “priest” would be at St. Pats when he was not assigned tomSt. John the Apostle Parish. Also, when I did the calculations, Danny would be 13 in 1989 which would mean hie would be in grade 8. Again I am confused. Wasn’t Robyn Gwyn ordained in 1988 and sent to,a parish in Brockville? I do believe he is guilty. I would just like these ” holes” filled in.

      Yes, there were closing arguments, but I unfortunately had to leave and missed them. I have been told bits and pieces about what was said but want to get the transcript to see exaclty what was said and by whom.

      Re age. Danny was older than 13 in Grade 8. There are unresolved questions as to whether he was 6 or 7 when he started school. Also, he spent two years in Grade 8, and what was called a transitional year going from Grade 8 to Regiopolis Notre-Dame. I have to work through my notes to try to sort this out, but it’s difficult. Danny isn’t sure how old he was when he started school, and to my knowledge there were no records produced which tracked him throughout his school years. Once I have it sorted out I will post, but I may well end up having to wait for transcripts.

      Yes, Gwyn was ordained in 1988, but he was back for his diaconate year in 1987. He was supposed to be at St. Mary’s, but it seems he was doing as he pleased while at St. Mary’s. I believe that Father Hibbard according to reports written by Father Hibbard he was virtually never around. He didn’t show up for Masses. He didn’t do what he was asked to do by the Rector. He wasn’t sleeping at the Rectory. No one knew where he ws or, I gather, what he was doing. He decided to take two weeks off for holiday. He unilaterally decided. And away he went. He was described by Hibbard as very immature and most irresponsible. Father Hibbard also said that Gwyn was ‘not confronting the problem of celibacy sufficiently.’

        Thank you for all the work you are doing Sylvia. I was a student at St. Francis in Brockville during the late 80’s and am so disturbed to remember his involvement in the school and with children, all the while demonstrating this unthinkable behavior and abuse. Have the reports written by Fr. Hibbard been released publicly? I would be interested in reading them please – or are the court records for either active case available? Thank you so much

          No, the Hibbard reports have not been released publicly. I did try to get them but the process for getting exhibits has unfortunately become very complicated and require filing a motion before the judge. I’m not sure if I will go through the process.

          The transcripts from this trial can be purchased. I will be ordering a few sections.

          I am interested in hearing your recollections of Father Gwyn while you were a student St. Francis. Would you be willing to share?

      Yes. Interesting. Danny made mention of the principal in relation to three separate incidents:

      (1) He testified that he had erred in initially telling police that it was Mr. Hamilton who introduced him to Father Gwyn. He told the court that that statement to police was given when police told him they had been looking for him and wanted to talk about his allegations against Father Gwyn. He said he had no time to think. He has been thinking about that ever since and decided that it probably wasn’t Mr. Hamilton who introduced him to Gwyn because he recalled an occasion where Hamilton introduced him to someone else or something along those lines and thinks he got mixed up by that. He could not say with certainty that Hamilton did NOT introduce him, but he thought probably it was not him.

      (2) Danny said his mother told him to tell anyone who asked about the bruises and marks on his body that he had been in a fight with another boy. One day, according to Danny. Mr. Hamilton asked about the marks. Danny told his story about the fight. Mr. H. than asked Danny to show him the house where the boy lived. Danny pointed to a garage, and it happened it was the garage of a nun’s home. According to Danny, that is when Mr. Hamilton found out where the marks came from. Danny said he hadn’t lied very well.

      (3) Danny testified that Mr. Hamilton was the first person he told about the sexual abuse. According to Danny, Mr. Hamilton told him to get back to class. When asked if he thought Mr. H took him seriously, he said “no.” When asked if he thought Mr. believed him, he said “no.”

      Mr. H testified that he does not recall seeing any signs of injury on Danny. He testified that he knew Danny’s home life was not good, and when asked how he would know that he replied that it would have been in Danny’s OSR (I think that’s Ontario Student registry?)

      Mr. Hamilton denied all.

    I believe Danny. I am disappointed that Mr. Hamilton has denied everything. Perhaps he doesn’t remember. Or is trying to absolve himself from any responsibility if he in fact knew and did nothing to help Danny. I believe the principal at St. Pats before Mr. Hamilton died a few years ago so if that is who first introduced Danny to Gwyn. he’s out of luck. I wonder if the Crown interviewed other teachers or students in his class. I believe Geyn was at that school; perhaps at the invitation of another teacher. In those days people were in and out of schools and it was no big deal. No signing in or out. And principals stayed pretty much in their offices and had little interaction with students
    unless it was a disciplinary matter. Gwyn could have been in that school and the principal might not even have known about it. But someone knows. It doesn’t sound like the Crown has done enough of an investigation. I wonder of the second complainant was a St. Pats student or Regi student.

    Here’s my other concern. It is obvious from Father Hibbard’s report that Gwyn was not a suitable candidate for the priesthood, yet he was ordained anyway. That is highly disturbing. Furthermore, after his psychiatric assessment, he was “retired” and removed from his pastoral ministry. Hmmm. They knew! That is disturbing!!!
    Why was he not reported to the police. Danny was probably one of the 4-9 boys he mentions. AND who is paying for his legal defence? Lots of unanswered questions. I am not impressed.

      I agree Marie on all points. I have no idea if the other complainant was a student at either school, but now know from testimony that it was the other complainant who came forward first. Those allegations according to media reports, date to between 01 January and 31 December 2000.

      Re Gwyn at the school: Danny testified that he recalled Gwyn at basketball practices (or games?) at St. Pat’. He had no recollection of what Gwyn’s role was. He also testified that a janitor from the school was involved.

      Re Father Hibbard. I was told that two of the Father Hibbard reports were extremely negative, but a third was more positive. I was not in the court for that testimony. No matter, with all that I did hear my sentiments were and are the same as yours. Why in the name of all that’s truly good and holy was this man ordained to the priesthood?!

      Re why Hibbard was not reported to police when he was removed?: unfortunately it’s highly possible that the victim and his family did not was to proceed with criminal action. That’s another issue. However, I do believe that in such cases the diocese/archbishop has a duty to inform parishioners why the priest is being removed, and should urge anyone with information or allegations of sexual abuse by that priest to contact police ( I wish I could say urge them to contact the diocese, but I fear that all that does is enable further cover-up – that would, however be the ideal, with Church officials assisting the victims and their families emotionally, spiritually and financially, and then contacting police to ensure that justice is served on this earth.

      Yes, I wonder too who is paying his legal costs.

      Mr. Hamilton testified that a Dan (Don?) Peterson who was a custodian at the school ran the basketball. H. didn’t know if Danny played basketball. He testified that he did not recall Gwyn being at the school, and he testified that the first time he met Father Gwyn was at a baptism of a family member around the year 2000. He also testified that it was possible that Gwyn was in the gym as a spectator.

    I take it that Danny stands by his recollection that Mr. H. Took him out to show him the house of the boy who beat him up. Also that he told him about Gwyn’s abuse and was dismissed.

      There was no opportunity for Danny to respond to the Mr. H denials. Danny testified to those points under examination-in-chief by the Crown (assistant Crown) and again under cross examination by defence.

    It seems rather unfair that Danny could not respond to the denials made by the principal. Something just isn’t right. I can’t imagine that Danny made that up because it is easy to verify. Wouldn’t the Crown have verified that story before the Trial? Lawyers don’t generally like surprises.
    Danny is correct that Don Peterson ( the custodian)was the basketball coach. He died a couple of years ago. That leaves at least the possibility that Gwyn was at the school for games and practices. The testimony by the principal worries me the most. He is refuting all of Danny’s important claims. I wonder if the judge will use that as reasonable doubt in this case.
    I am so sad that there was no one at the school that could have mentored this boy when he was an adolescent; someone he could trust. All he had was this sick SOB. Why couldn’t a teacher or the Principal bought him some new clothes and shoes? It sounds to me like it was very obvious that he was extremely neglected and needy.
    Do you know if he has a home? A job? Praying for him.

    I think I understand that you do want to put the truth out there. However, I find it upsetting how detailed your discussions are. The complainants are people living in the community and information regarding their private life is being exposed here. Don’t you think that you could upset the complainants and their family by invading their private life with all this information. Have you thought about that? I am a friend of one of the complainant and I find that it is difficult enough for them to have lived this and now the details being exposed is detrimental to their healing. Thank you for considering not putting everything out there.

      I have taken pains Lorraine to ensure that I say nothing which would identify the complainants. It often means I am unable to put out information which I believe would help the public to better understand what happened, but I don’t do it. I don’t see that anyone else has either. Perhaps you might contact me privately to point out what has been said which you see as problematic? Heaven knows, as much as I want the truth to come out I don’t want to cause further suffering for the victims

    I understand your concerns Lorraine – however i’m uncertain why i was singled out for this. The Hibbard report is one written pertaining to the appropriate or inappropriate behavior of Fr Gwyn prior to his ordination – and subsequently fitness for priesthood. This should have little if anything to do to with the complainant. As for court records, i asked only if they were available for public viewing – not for public posting here – I’m uncertain how if asking if records were public would be further victimizing the complainant. I do think he is very brave and very strong for coming forward and i keep him in my heart and prayers.

    Both are open to the public. Please mark your calendars and do try to get there is you can so that we can keep tabs on what is happening. The 16 December date should be fairly short but will hopefully give an idea of when at least one sentencing hearing will be set. It sounds as though the sentencing for each of the two cases will proceed separately because a different judge presided at each trial.

    I don’t understand why the January court date is “to be spoken to.” Given the time I shall try to find out.

    It would have been setting another date, possibly for a sentencing hearing. Since his last court date was Friday there is no way as yet of knowing what the outcome was. It is highly doubtful there will be anything happening before the New Year.

    This date is for BOTH cases which went to trial.

    26 April 2017: 1 pm, sentencing (hearing?), Ontario Superior Court of Justice, 5 Court Street, Kingston (it looks as though this relates to the offences to which he was convicted at trial)

    I will add that assignment court is usually to set a date, in this case for sentencing or a sentencing hearing. Things can change, but that is usually the case.

    Please. People must need to know
    That this man has done this to many people
    And it started back in the 1980’s
    Check the years he was at St Mary’s in Carleton Place Ont

    Yesterday Father Gwyn was sentenced to 33 months in jail on the charges to which he had previously entered a guilty plea. That 33 months is to run concurrent to the three-year sentence for the charges on which he was convicted. GUILTY plea: 24 October 2016 – July 2017 sentencing to 33 months – to run concurrent with above . The three-year sentence was pronounced in April of this year. He has 33 months left to serve.

      33 months is not much for permanently scarring young lives .. sometimes what goes around, does come around .. thank you Sylvia .

      what a failure of the justice system – 33 months – despicable – but even more so that it is CONCURRENT to current sentence.
      This whole situation disgusts me so much. My thoughts, prayers and love are with the complainant and for the others harmed by this man who did not come forward.

    As per the detective listed on the case, Robin Gwyn is deceased and died in custody. No further details known by me as I did not speak with the detective directly
