 Rino Deschênes Former priest convicted of sexual abuse of minors

A former priest of the parish of Rivière-Verte , New Brunswick , Rino Deschênes , was sentenced to seven and a half years behind bars.

He pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual assault against minors , three counts of gross indecency and one of attempted buggery .

He committed these crimes between 1967 and 1969 , when he was a priest in Green River . He was 27 years old at the time. He is now 74 years old.

The acts were more specifically masturbation of young boys who were aged 10 to 13 years at the onset.

In her decision, Judge Brigitte Volpé considered aggravating factors. For example, the victims were minors and there has been a breach of trust because Rino Deschênes was in a position of authority. The judge noted his lack of remorse and his apology which did not seem sincere.

The victims qualified him as garbage.

Rino Deschênes left the area shortly after his assaults. He returned to settle there only a few years . The victims believed him to be dead, but when they learned he was back in the area, they decided to act.

The defense asked for a sentence of three years . The Crown recommended eight years. The Crown prosecutor, Pierre Roussel, is satisfied with the judge’s decision.

“The comments from our department are typical for a case like this one. Truly satisfied with the sentence imposed. I think Judge Volpé considered all the criteria that we must take into account in a case like this. She highlighted the aggravating factors and the sentence reflects precisely these aggravating factors. ” – Pierre Roussel, Crown Prosecutor

The three complainants maintained throughout the trial the harm they have suffered, and the hatred, shame, the desire to disappear altogether they feel, and the fact that even now they have difficulty to live a normal life . They seemed visibly pleased with the decision. They believe that they will now be able to move on.

Il avait reconnu sa culpabilité à quatre chefs d’accusation de nature sexuelle sur des mineurs, soit trois accusations de grossière indécence et une de tentative de sodomie.

Il a commis ces crimes entre les années 1967 et 1969, quand il était prêtre à Rivière-Verte. Il était âgé de 27 ans à l’époque. Il a aujourd’hui 74 ans.

Il s’agit surtout de masturbation de jeunes garçons qui étaient âgés de 10 à 13 ans au début.

Dans sa décision, la juge Brigitte Volpé a tenu compte de facteurs aggravants. Par exemple, les victimes étaient d’âge mineur et il y a eu abus de confiance puisque Rino Deschênes était en position d’autorité. De plus, la juge a souligné son manque de remords et ses excuses qui ne paraissaient pas sincères.

Les victimes l’ont qualifié d’ordure.

Rino Deschênes a quitté la région peu après ses gestes. Il est revenu s’y installer il y a quelques années à peine. Les victimes le croyaient mort, mais lorsqu’elles ont appris qu’il était de retour dans la région, elles ont décidé d’agir.

La défense demandait une peine de trois ans. La Couronne recommandait huit ans. Le procureur de la Couronne, Pierre Roussel, est satisfait de la décision de la juge.

« Les commentaires de notre département sont les mêmes que d’habitude dans un cas comme celui-ci. Franchement satisfait de la sentence imposée. Je pense que la juge Volpé a tenu en ligne de compte tous les critères qu’on doit regarder dans un cas similaire à celui-ci. Elle a souligné les facteurs aggravants, et la sentence reflète justement ces facteurs aggravants. »

Les trois plaignants ont insisté tout au long du procès sur les torts qu’ils ont subi, ainsi que sur la haine, la honte, l’envie de carrément disparaître qu’ils ressentent, et sur le fait qu’encore maintenant, ils ont de la difficulté à vivre une vie normale.

Ils semblaient visiblement satisfaits de la décision. Ils croient qu’ils pourront maintenant tourner la page.
