OTTAWA — A disgraced Roman Catholic bishop who got busted with hundreds of pornographic photos of young boys has been sentenced to 15 months in jail and two years probation.

But since Ontario Court Justice Kent Kirkland is giving Raymond Lahey double credit for the time he has served since last spring, the cleric has essentially done his jail sentence already.

Kirkland also imposed a series of stringent probation rules.

Lahey pleaded guilty last May to one count of importing child pornography and voluntarily went to jail.

He was arrested at the Ottawa airport in September 2009 after customs authorities found hundreds of pornographic photos of young boys on his laptop and a handheld device.

At a sentencing hearing last month, Lahey offered an apology to his church and to victims of child pornography.

Today’s Rant: I read yesterday where disgraced Bishop Lahey (yes he’s still a Bishop) was sententenced to 15 months in jail for possession of child porn. I agree that 15 months was enough for this crime when you consider all the mitigating factors (first time offender, long time public servant, etc). What I don’t agree with is that he received a double time credit for time in remand. He should hav…e done the entire 15 months (Harper is fixing that). I liken his crime to that of the drug user and the pusher… Put the pusher away for a long, long time and slap the hands of the user. Now what really irks me the most is all these Roman Catholic Phoneys who say things like they have lost their faith because of what he has done, or their faith was severely tested by his actions or People in the Roman Catholic hub of NS (Antigonish) stating that Bishop Lahey is no longer welcome in their community. I’m not sure what form of Catholicism that these people are practising but it is certainly not what I practise. First: Bishop lahey is a human being who has suffered the frailties of being human. He is a mentally sick man who requires medical help and also a man who has broken our laws and has paid the price at today’s going rate. He has NEVER been convicted of being a pedophile (although probably not a far stretch). Second: I’ve said this before, Bishop Lahey and all Roman Catholic priests are/were simply the messenger of the word of God. They ARE NOT the ROMAN CATHOLIC religion and they ARE NOTwhat being a Christian is all about. I submit that those who have “lost” their religion, were religiously weak or as a minimum, bought into the gossip that flies during these trying times. Let’s get back to the basics, bring love, understanding and compassion into our lives and try reading the Bible or go to Church and someone will read the word of God to you. Just sayin’.

The only ones that were sentenced in this case are the victims. Talk about preferential treatments! This was done in order to protect the Roman Catholic Church’s image, well, lets face it the picture is really blurred………….This decision to set Raymond Lahey free is appalling and unforgivable on the part of those who have set him free!

“Catholics come home” the priests need a new generation of alter boys. Their new website being advertised on TV is crazy. If anyone rejoins that club of pedophiles or helps pay for their sexual assault exploites (by way of your offerings), don’t worry you will eventually be judged on your death bed. And whether you’re doing these evil crimes, hiding them, ignoring them, or helping to pay for them, GOD will get even!

Totally disguisted! If he were a teacher, coach etc.he would be gone in no time! So he and his lawyer play the “gay card”……He’s a pedofile!!! I have nothing against gays but to make that statement does it not make one believe all gays are pedofiles! He took the most precious thing from boys…..their Innocent childhood! I will continue to pray to God directly! Shame you you Lahey and your lawyers whom we paid for!

The Bishop has kept his faith throughout this ordeal even making sure the young boys in the pornography wore prayer beads. His long term gay relationship while a Bishop seems to be out of sink with the bible but fortunately for him, his faith will be eventually rewarded, his forgiveness is guaranteed by Jesus and he will go straight to heaven with all the other pedophiles in the Clergy who confess their sins and ask God/ Jesus/ Holy Ghost for forgiveness.

He was given double the credit for time served???????? Where is the justice in that? Next he will be looking for an appeal because he supposedly served more time than he was actually sentenced for. Apology NOT ACCEPTED!!!!! He should have received a sentence for 15 months for every explicit & pornographic photo he had in his possession………….just sayin’

For one I agree with most of the comments posted here. 2FOR 1 is a crock of ****. Its about time sentences are handed out that meet the crimes. First of all he should of been defrocked instead of the church defending him. This is a slap in the face and to the parish to see all the money they give to the church goes to defend scum like this.

As the Atlantic Canada SNAP Group Leader (survivors network of those abused by priests) we feel that lahey should of done 15 months starting the day he was sentenced, i know of many cases that the judge ignored time sitting awaiting trial.

If anyone was a victim of sexual abuse please contact the police then call SNAP for support through the rough road ahead.

What a joke, how in the hell do they ever expect people to have faith and want to even think about following the word of god from the catholic church Pfffffffff. This is so terrible, especially knowing that the church helps people like Lahey ,I’d put him in jail and toss the key away,And as far as it goes for that catholic religion or faith ,I HOPE IT CRUMBLES TO THE GROUND. And for the ones that are brainwashed in following it , o-well , you got beleive in something I guess, however, I do feel sorry for them. And for the POPE, GOD only know what kind of dirt and secerets hes covering up . I’m so disgusted, and ashamed that I even went to the catholic school and church when I was a kid…
