9 Court Briefs: Priest’s preliminary inquiry on sex charges slated for June

HPIM1065.JPGFR. Yvon Arseneault is charged with three crimes under sections 156 (indecent assault on a male) and 157 (gross indecency) of the criminal code. These charges in Miramichi are in addition to others that will be tried in Moncton. Arseneault’s lawyer is Gilles Lemieux of Moncton. Arseneault will be tried by judge and jury, and a preliminary inquiry will be held on June 23rd, with the only expected witness to be the complainant.

Arseneault is a priest of the Archdiocese of Moncton, ordained 11 May 1968. Father Arsenault was quietly removed from his parish in August 2012. On December 2012 parishioners were advised that the removal was because of sex abuse allegations. Arsenault faces a total of 17 charges from 6 complainants, and will stand trial in Moncton on the other charges on September 14th before a judge and jury.
