What’s happening in Corner Brook?

Did the sex abuse trial of previously convicted molester turned ‘social worker’ Father Gary Hoskins trial get under way in Corner Brook, Newfoundland yesterday?  I checked for media coverage.  The Western Star in Corner Brook is pretty good for covering trials such as this – I see nothing.  Ditto NTV.  Am I missing it? or, is it just not there because it’s just not happening?

There was an  application related to trial on 06 April 2016 at the Corner Brook Superior Court.  Has the trial been postponed?  I hope and pray that is not the case and that I have simply somehow managed to overlook the articles.

I will call today to try to find out what is happening.  If you know anything about the status of the trial please post a comment or contact me.

And, yes, please do keep the complainant and his family in your prayers.

Enough for now,

Sylvia

Here’s the answer to my question. I missed this.

Crown application in Hoskins sex trial postponed for a month

A pre-trial application in the case of Gary Gerard Hoskins, a former Roman Catholic priest based in western Newfoundland and charged with sex offences, won’t be heard until next month.

The application was set to be dealt with in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador on Wednesday morning, but Crown attorney Kari Ann Pike informed Justice David Hurley she was still trying to gather documents to support her argument.

The application submitted by the Crown involves incorporating similar fact evidence related to a prior conviction on similar charges in 1997.

Hoskins, 57, currently has two charges of sexual assault against him. The allegations involve one male victim and are alleged to have taken place in Stephenville some time between January 1984 and December 1986.

He served three months in prison in 1997 for sexually assaulting a boy in 1985.

Hoskins has pleaded not guilty to the latest charges. The initial trial date of May 12 will now be used to hear the Crown’s application.

So,yes, the trial date is bumped while Crown prepares arguments to introduce similar fact evidence from previous Hoskins sex trial. That I can understand. Important. Let’s hope and pray Karne Ann Pike secures the requisite documents to make her case.

As always, during these trying days, please keep the complainant and his family in your prayers.
