Disappointment With Dunlop: Wells

June 05, 2008 — Disappointment with Perry Dunlop at the Cornwall Public Inquiry. City Police Inspector Brendon Wells says the former city police officer accused him of being part of a conspiracy and tried to derail a child sex abuse investigation. An emotional Wells called those allegations slanderous and says it has hurt him and his family. (Hear audio clip below) Wells adds he's disappointed that Dunlop has decided not to testify at the inquiry. Dunlop is credited with blowing the lid off child sex abuse allegations in the area. He is currently in jail for refusing to testify.

[Transcript of audio clip: I’m extremely disappointed that Mr. Dunlop will not come forward and explain to my family and I why he felt it necessary…to spread such untruths.I want to at this time thank you, Mr.Commissioner, for the opportunity to be able to say publicly that Mr. Dunlop’s allegations are untrue.]

Allegations Of Mismanagement Within Cornwall Police Force

June 04, 2008 — Fresh allegations of Cornwall police force mismanagement were leveled today at the Public Inquiry. A 1990 report written by a group of city staff sergeants including Brendon Wells also says former police chief Claude Shaver was largely to blame. The document surfaced at the Cornwall Public Inquiry today, and says the chief's decision making was impulsive and he sought every opportunity to be absent from the office. While on the stand, Wells testified that he does not sign these types of documents lightly and he believes every item mentioned in the report is accurate. (Hear audio clip below) The report recommended the chief resign however, at the time; Chief Shaver said he had no intention of doing so. Shaver was the top officer when child sex abuse allegations were garnering a lot of attention in the Cornwall area. He is scheduled to testify at the inquiry next week.

[Transcript of audio clip: as one person that signed this report, that Chief Shaver paid more lip service to the Association of the day, gave them a little bit more credibility than he did his upper management level.]
