A tearful apology to abuse victims

Angelo Towndale, formerly of the Children's Aid Society of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, made no suggestions to Commissioner Normand Glaude at the Cornwall Public Inquiry on Friday, but did offer a personal statement including an apology to abused children.

The once acting director and 30-year employee of the CAS reflected on the large number of documents he reviewed while preparing to testify at the inquiry over the past month.

"The impact it had on me is very difficult to describe, reading those files," Towndale said as his voice broke under the weight of emotion. "You have to look at the resources we had, 25 staff; today 155."

He reiterated his frequently made statement that the community's attitude toward physical punishment was different in the 1970s than it is now.

"I apologize to the children for my failures," Towndale said in tears. "Today my life is different because of them."

Commissioner Normand Glaude attempted to console Towndale.

"Sir, you have to remember those matters were in the 1970s," Glaude said, "I'm sure the community and the Children's Aid Society have grown, not only in size and wisdom and knowledge . . . I'm simply suggesting you don't have to be so hard on yourself."

Towndale returns to the inquiry for cross-examination on Monday at 9:30 a. m.

Haven't visited this rag for a while and now I understand why, the more thing change, the more they stay the same in good olld CornHole and I'll send a copy to "Heir" Editor.
Kinda nice about the apologies for the physical abuse that went on back in the 1970's as Glaude himself stated "Sir, you have to remember those matters were in the 1970's" but even Glaude himself doesn't seem to grasp the fact that even back in the 1970's and forever that it was wrong to sexually abuse children. And to watch how they "System" still tries to sweep it under the rug and pretend it didn't happen only it's still going on as none of you can tell me of one CAS or CCAS that has ever been investigated, charged and/or convicted for their collective part in the negligence of these poor kids. Remember Jeffrey Baldwin who was starved to death by his grandparents who were already in the CCAS's records of child abuse to their own children 15-20 years ago and that the CCAS failed to check its records, gave Jeffrey to those very same people and the end result was that Jeffrey Baldwin was starved to death over 5 long agonizing years by those very same people and NOTHING was ever done to bring that particular CCAS to justice for their part in his death. If they had only checked their records, Jeffrey Baldwin would be alive today and his grandparents would be getting old in comfort instead of spending life in jail with no chance of parole for 20 years. Justice, you gotta be kidding me and as for this Inquiry, it too is an even bigger joke on the public. The Justice System should hang their collective heads in shame as we watch bad guys and bad cops walk because their cases took too long to get to court and they were torched. Just wondering, is there really a method to their madness after all? I'll send a copy to the Inquiry.ca as this rag is still up to their dictatorial ways, eh?
